3 US soldiers dead in Iraq
October 14, 2003
TWO US soldiers died in a military vehicle accident in Baghdad and another was found dead, floating in the Euphrates river in the northwestern Iraqi town of Haditha, coalition forces said.
"Two 1st Armored Division soldiers were killed and one was injured in a military vehicle accident with a civilian vehicle" in Baghdad Monday, the US-led coalition said in a statement.
It also said a 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment soldier was found dead in the Euphrates river, in Haditha, 250 kilometres northwest of Baghdad.
"The soldier was found floating in the river approximately 20 minutes after being reported missing" on Monday evening, the statement said.
It said doctors tried to revive the soldier at the scene.

You're right, it struck me as odd when I read the report. The accident could have been deliberate. Yet if we took any sampling of 140,000 people in a city in America, we'd probably be startled at the high vehicle accident rate. The drowning is beyond my speculation.

My son called me this past Sunday. He told me that 4 days prior he was on a bus with 7 other soldiers traveling from Kuwait to Doha for a class when a car with mideastern men tried to drive them off the road. Our guys drew and pointed their weapons and then and only then did the perps veer off. Our guys got the license plate number and turned it in to the MPs.
God bless all our troops, their families and America.

If you've ever participated in a major peacetime military exercise, you'll know that GIs die in accidents all the time. In fact if you look at overall US military accident rates over any given period period of time, you'll find a lot of fatalities. It's an inherently dangerous calling.

How did the one found in the river die? Was it an accident?
To: Quilla
There are especially a lot of vehicle accidents, I think, as in the Middle East people drive very fast, on poor roads, and in an unpredictable way. Their reaction to apprehension or dangerous circumstances is to speed up.
