The Western Michigan University School of Music is facing accusations of cultural appropriation after its mostly-white choir sang African-American spirituals during a Black History Month concert.

The show was part of the Western Michigan University School of Music’s Live and Interactive concert series. It took place on Wednesday last week, at the Dalton Center Recital Hall. The performance called “Spirituals: From Ship to Shore” featured John Wesley Wright, an associate professor at Salisbury University, who is black.

Why isn’t “Hamilton” cultural appropriation?

Time for the university to create a Marcus Garvey memorial movement.

Bingo! One of my kids had a solo at Christmas that was a spiritual in college chorale. Conductor happens to be black. I’m sure they would have a meltdown.

Idiots.

All living cultures borrow from each other.
The only pure cultures are dead cultures.

My new rule: never honor anyone else’s work, lest I be accused of appropriation. In fact, let us never speak of them and their work again. Just forget it.

How stupid can you get! It they had sung O Sole Mio, Cielito Lindo, or Auld Lang Syne it would have been "cultural appropriation"--or eaten macaroni, worn saris, or eaten grits!

ANYTHING is cultural appropriation!

Spiritual Songs are derived from Scottish Presbyterian plain songs.
As one of largely Scots descent I give them permission.

Despicable racist comment!...... /S

Are these people wearing clothing in a style appropriated from European, i.e. Caucasian? What other cultural appropriations are they guilty of, diet, Holidays, language?

Do they ever sing songs written/composed by a race other then theirs.........maybe Christmas songs/hymns?

Apparently the most racist people on Earth are the ones constantly bitching about others being racist and they're the ones most in need of remembering that we all are one race, the race of man.

Because white culture is worthless and has no value so it can’t be appropriated. It can only be ridiculed.

I like it! That will obviate all these stupid (fill in the blank) History months!

Oh, how I wish it would go like this:

Liberal: That’s cultural appropriation!
Person: So what? If you don’t like it, look away.

Liberal: I’m telling you, that’s cultural appropriation.
Person: Shut up.

Why are these kids in trouble over this, but it was ok for Hillary to drawl in a mocking way a black accent, when she drawled that she didn’t feeeel nooooo. Waaaays. Taaarrd. She did that in a black church, and got a standing ovation from black ministers and congregation for her hatchet job on a Negro spiritual.

The Negro Spiritual: GO DOWN MOSES, is from the ancient Jew’s point of view, yet blacks sang it as their own anti-slavery song. Wanna talk about “appropriation” writ large?
