More than a dozen Democratic candidates are still vying for the nomination in the 2020 presidential race, possibly living the door open to another: Hillary Clinton.
The Washington Post reports two sources close to Clinton say she’s still considering entering the 2020 race for the White House, potentially setting up a rematch with President Donald Trump.
The newspaper cites 17 state and national party leaders who expressed concerns about the Democratic field, still large and filled with weaknesses after four debates. A new CNN poll shows Joe Biden has widened his lead to 34 percent, ahead of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (19 percent), Sen. Bernie Sanders (16 percent) and everyone else at 6 percent (South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and California Sen. Kamala Harris) or less.
Biden still has raised concerns among contenders, from his verbal gaffes and poor fundraising to defending his family against Republican attacks on his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine. And party leaders worry Sanders and Warren are “too liberal to win a general election,” while the rest haven’t rallied enough momentum.
“You can imagine much stronger candidates,” Elaine Kamarck, a Democratic National Committee member, told the Post. (She told the newspaper she’d rather see Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who declined to run, or retired admiral William McRaven, who oversaw the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, in the race.)
