New York--Move over, MAGA hat. MATH may be the next big thing in political headgear.
Yes, as in mathematics. Or as 2020 presidential candidate Andrew Yang suggests at his rain-soaked rally in New York City Tuesday night: Make America Think Harder.
The catchphrase is as good as any to describe the people wearing those hats in Washington Square Park. Theyre the type to say theyre sick of emotional appeals from career politicians. They cheer when their candidate a corporate lawyer turned CEO turned philanthropist starts a sentence with, I looked at the numbers or I did the math. The word rational comes up a lot in conversation.
Which seems almost ironic, considering Mr. Yangs banner policy is to give every American adult $1,000 a month regardless of employment status or wages. Its a version of universal basic income, and sounds like something out of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders playbook.
Yet Mr. Yang frames his Freedom Dividend less in terms of political ideology than actionable steps. Its a counterbalance, he argues, to the millions of middle class jobs that have been and will be lost to automation. Im a capitalist, he told The New York Times in 2018, and I believe that universal basic income is necessary for capitalism to continue.
The 2,500 supporters at his Manhattan rally dig it. They say Mr. Yangs direct approach, his attention to policy (his site lists dozens of proposals), and his effort to avoid riling people up or demonizing them are a balm in an era of hyperbole and partisanship. Sure, hes polling between 1% and 3% and ranks near the bottom in name recognition among the 23 Democrats in the race. And they know hes faced criticisms about attracting fans from the less-than-savory regions of Reddit and 4chan.

I paid over $30,000 in state and federal income tax last year. I reckon my $12,000 per year will cost me north of $20,000 in additional tax.
Panem et circenses. Truly there is nothing new under the sun.
That's just the way things work.
In simple terms, an economic market is basically an auction. More money chasing the same goods, prices rise. Less money chasing the same goods, prices fall.
As an example of this, look at auto dealers. When sales fall (less money chasing goods), the dealers start to bargain by cutting prices (less money, lower prices).
When demand for a dealer's cars gets strong (more money chasing goods), the dealers refuse to sell below MSRP (sticker price) and may even tack on pricey options.
This "candidate" is giving away free "smoke" in hopes of buying votes of the "stupid."
Not exactly the same thing if the money is first taken from other Americans as the funding mechanism, though yes, of course, it will change aggregate buying patterns and thus the demand for some goods will rise (while the demand for others will fall).
Thee great thing about the plan is that it wont cost anyone anything! He will produce the money out of thin air miraculously! And he can guarantee that it will not cause any inflation. What a guy!
Of course they do. The promise of free money is always popular.
Either he gets this extra thousand a month per person by raising taxes on those who pay them, or by printing bucketloads of money. The one way puts instant brakes on the economy, the other pushes us into Venezuela or Zimbabwe level inflation. And the effects will be felt worldwide.
The result is the same. In your scenario, the price of Rolls-Royces will fall but the price of Toyotas will rise.
Free Unicorns too!!! President Yang....yeah that’s the ticket!
Wadda LOON.
Buying votes 101...
Roughly $400 billion per year. He says the tech companies will pay for it. Most those companies dont even generate a profit.
UBI: GOLD OVER CASH
Here is the SIMPLE ANSWER to UBI sellers.
Add the option for Conservatives, for my Universal Basic Income, I take payments in Gold ounces, instead of cheap cash. Or I demand payment in stock, same share amount.
Watch the UBI scam crash as they must pay in a real commodity instead of cheap paper.
There, UBI answered. :-)
Payment in 2 Oz of Gold
vs
$1000 UBI Cash
Interesting article, but the discussion needs to be about “HOW” not “WHY”. Either the author or the article did not understand the how, or she just doesn’t care.
He wants to steal from producers to prop up the unmotivated.
Quit buying $800 phones, $5 coffee, and $150/mo cable and pay off your bills.
Quit trying to impress people who don't care about you in the first place.
Live within your means and plan for the future.
