I never heard of a Tramp Chair, but I can picture one.

A North American correspondent from where, one wonders? Conor Duffy. I'm only guessing that someone from elsewhere has gotten a taste of just how hostile the media are perceived to be by the people who were there. Since all the foreign readers know is what is transmitted to them by those very same media, this is evidently somewhat of a surprise.

This is war, a war of a kind that is only dimly recognized by those whose view of the United States is filtered by the same media who are waging it. It's going hot. That cage was there to see that nobody on the opposition side was molested, and that doesn't seem to me to be all that difficult to understand.

It was an extremely odd experience though to be effectively trapped while the people whose views you'd taken trouble to seek out shouted things at you over a couple of hours.

These people have been called racist, misogynist, ignorant, evil, nazis, fascists, deplorable scum by the press and media. If this "journalist" doesn't understand how they could possibly want to scorn the press in general, he is an idiot. The same type of idiot who couldn't understand why Kavanaugh was so angry over a few simple accusations.

We're supposed to think that ABC just wanted to report the perspectives of those at the rally and waiting to get in. And then we get this sentence about the virtually assured blue wave and the nasty sounding red opposition. The word choice conveys the inherent bias of the reporter who just wanted to get quotes from those fly-over rubes and then highlight their opposition to what their betters on the coasts know to be right for them.
