Former Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley was in Davenport on Saturday, saying controversies in the White House are pushing unaligned voters to the left in a way that will help Democrats in this years midterm elections.
The crazier things get out of that Trump White House, the more independents look our way, and theyre coming our way strong, OMalley told more than 40 people at Scott County Democratic headquarters.
OMalley said that President Donald Trump has been a great recruitment tool for Democrats, and this years midterms are a chance to push back on the 2016 losses.
Great countries sometimes make bad mistakes. Good countries correct those mistakes, and thats what we have the ability to do in these midterms, he said.
OMalley, an unsuccessful 2016 presidential candidate who is thinking about giving it another try in 2020, was in Iowa for a series of events this weekend, including a fundraiser in Iowa City on Sunday for Rep. Dave Loebsack.
The former governor has been traveling to more than two dozen states, and he focused Saturday on the need for Democrats to prevail at the state level.
Republicans have full control of legislatures in 31 states and the governorship in 33, including in Iowa. OMalley said it was time to win back some of those states, and he pointed to the 92nd House District, a key seat for Democrats if theyre to win control of the Iowa House.
The seat is currently held by Rep. Ross Paustian, R-Walcott, but it has changed parties frequently over the years.
Democratic leaders have urged a focus on the 2018 midterms, rather than the 2020 presidential election. And, like OMalley, a number of potential future presidential hopefuls have worked to help candidates on the ballot this fall, an effort that also can help themselves should they decide to run in 2020.
Already, OMalley has helped with two special elections in Davenport.
In 2016, OMalley finished a distant third in the Iowa caucuses, and there are a bevy of potential candidates for 2020 who are better known and have higher political profiles.
In an interview Saturday, OMalley said that, unlike in 2016, theres a higher priority being placed now on new leadership and hes trying to figure out whether he fits that category.
Having run before in some respects, I dont. In other respects, the way the process unfolded theres a lot of people I talk to who say, you were the younger guy that they wouldnt let talk, and Id like to hear more from you, he said.
The 2016 contest essentially devolved into a head-to-head race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. He dropped out of the presidential race shortly after the Iowa caucuses.
On Saturday, he was reminded of the campaign by a man wearing an OMalley for President 2016 t-shirt. To laughter, the former governor called the man forward, told him he like his attire and added, Im sorry I couldnt have gotten you more friends, but it wasnt for lack of trying.
Well . . . there he goes again. #OweMalley
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Wishful thinking on his part...
more than 40 people
“pushing unaligned voters to the left”
I’m sure Martin the Martian has seen the huge crowds at the Trump rallies.
LOL.

Finally! Martin O’Malley, just who everyone has been waiting to hear from.
The Left is pushing more voters Right.
[The Left is pushing more voters Right.]
yes
oh sure. Commie Fed employees left over from a Dem admin being caught in subversive actions would hardly push voters to Communism, since Communism is all about subversive governments. OTOH, if college students can’t find a post office on their computers they probably are stupid enough to vote Communist.
DON’T ACCEPT THIS LYING BASTARD’S PREMISE!
I guess this dunce hasn’t bothered to look out the window. The incumbent governor of Maryland Republican Larry Hogan is up 35 over the quintessential liberal Democrat, the aptly named, Ben Jealous the “Black” former head of the NAACP. For this to happen Hogan MUST be getting huge support numbers from Maryland’s 31% African Americans. But I’m sure his audience that wouldn’t fill a bus loved hearing that lie.
.....he told 40 people.....
..................................................
President Trump just held another multi thousand person rally!
They couldn’t just count them?
Hopefully he is full of BS ... but unfortunately here in NH he is probably correct.
If the NH 2018 primary voting totals are any indication ... the Repubs are going to get wiped out ... even though the Repubs in NH balanced the budget, cut taxes, have the lowest Unemployment rate in recent memory ... yet it appears the majority of the people up here have been brainwashed into hating Trump to the point of insanity.
Did you have a lot of primary challenges on the GOP side? Do you have an open primary? Are the majority of your congressional seats GOP or Dem?
omally was a Freak while governor and since. He is a poster child for LIB lunatic. I hope he was in a large enough room at his presentation. 40 is a lot of people! He was very wrong in the past and continues the tradition. LOL
Here in NH, everything is open except the Governor.
State Reps, Senators, and the Governor are on 2 year terms only so they all run.
The Repubs hold the House, Senate, and Governor seat ... but we have an all Dem US House/Senate ... go figure.
But looking at the total votes in the primaries, the Dems outvoted the Repubs by over 20%.
This state has gone down hill so fast it is sickening.
I’ve got a great idea for marty-o: if he truly believes in his cause, he should cash in his retirements, dip into whatever savings or other portfolios he has, then go all-in. Great investment, right? It would be for someone who really thought there was a chance.
If, on the other hand, he is running a scam, he should just go away and stfu.
