Agreed, but there were some who did switch from Bern to a Trump and told why. Look back to the very gay liberal blogger Kevin Dujan (sp?) of Hillbuzz, whose whole raison d’être was about supporting Hillary’s 2008 run for the nomination. Look what happened to him! As he discovered more and more truths about Obama, and then Hllary, he finally became an outspoken Republican.

A little off topic, but Newsweek says they did: "Bernie Sanders Voters Helped Trump Win and Here's Proof" (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-gop/3580209/posts). According to this less than 80% of Sander's supporters voted for Hillary and 12% voted for Trump. Nominating Hillary cost the Democrats close to 10% of their base on election day. Bernie has reason to think he might be President, if the DNC did not cheat.

Now if Sanders got the nomination, no one knows how many Democrats would have refused to vote for him. Younger democrats who don't know better loved him, older Democrats know he's not one of them. For all the caterwauling Republicans had about our candidates, the Democrats had a rotten slate of candidates and they picked the worst one.

This is the first true and sensible thing I've ever seen from that crackpot:
"Most people, you know, are not rigidly Democrats or Republicans. They vote where they want."

I believe that Sanders voters felt their candidate was cheated out of the nomination via super delegates, debate questions given prior and DNC shenanigans. Had I been a Sanders supporter I’d have either sat 2016 out or voted Trump. It’s really that easy.
I was a Cruzer but when Trump won the primary fair and square I might add I was 100% behind him. Sadly, I knew my vote for him here in Texas wouldn’t mean much but I turned to all my family that I thought I could turn in Pennsylvania for Trump and happily we turned Pa for Trump.

I had a very good friend, in spite of our differing political views, who made some nasty and tasteless remarks during Reagan’s funeral proceedings. It exposed a degree of hatred for conservatives I had not seen before in him.

This after a spirited defense of Bill Clinton’s disgusting behavior with a 21 yo intern in the oval office.

I lost much respect for him that I did not regain.

While I actually like Trump’s outspoken use of social media and his less conventional attitude towards the establishment, I do think it would be prudent to be a little less quick on the twitter button.

You touched upon what I think is a very important point. Most conservatives don’t hate. We might disagree with, or even be repulsed by, a liberal politician. But we don’t hate.

For example, I am repulsed by Bill Clinton. He disgusts me. But I don’t hate him. I reserve hate for true monsters, like Hitler.

But liberals hate. Disagree with a liberal position, and they will hate you. And anything that you say is “hate speech”.

Your vote in Texas meant a lot. Texas was the one single state that Trump had to win. He could have lost any other single state and still won. If H had somehow flipped Texas she would be in the White House now.

If Hillary was thinking even for a second, she’d win Texas she must have been drinking the very very top shelf bourbon.

said, "no kidding"

I don't like Sanders politics but you have to admit he is a likable person.

“For the life of me, I don’t understand why Trump did that. There’s no upside to it. No Bernie Bro is going to read Trump’s tweets and say “By golly. Trump is right. Bernie is crazy. But plenty of them will be turned off, and maybe drift back to the traditional Democratic party.”

Using that logic Trump should never have called any of his opponents names. Little Marco, Low Energy JEB, Lyin’ Ted, Crooked Hillary.

All of his primary opponents had strong supporters who might be offended by the name calling and less likely to vote for Trump in the general. Even Clinton supporters “on the fence” might be less likely to cross over due to name calling.

I’m sure the name calling backfired in some cases. But any such negative effect was likely far outweighed by a positive effect with voters who saw the name-calling as an indication that Trump was a “tell it like it is” truth teller who calls it like he sees it. People are tired of that fake BS where politicians in congress call people they hate “my good friend from Massachusetts, the honerable Ted Kennedy”. It’s refreshing to hear a politician tell the truth.

We’ll never know what would have happened if Trump had run a different campaign, but he won - and you know the old saying: “don’t fix what ain’t broke”.

Another thing to note: The severity of Trump’s name branding was proportional to how much of a threat the opponent posed. It is not that earth shattering of an insult to be called “little”, “low energy” or even “crazy” in politics. Prole get called a lot worse. Being called “Lyin’ Ted” or “Crooked Hillary” - now that leaves a mark (especially when it’s true).

I bet a lot of the GOP never Trumpers were once Cruz supporters who can’t forgive Trump for branding Cruz as a liar. Trump had to hit Cruz hard because Cruz was real competition. I bet a lot of the hatred behind the left’s resist Trump movement is due to pissed off Clinton supporters who will never forgive Trump for branding her “crooked Hillary”. Trump has chosen to make the entire MSM his enemy by calling them dishonest, fake and disgusting every chance he gets. Most politicians try to suck up to the press believing they are too powerful to challenge. Trump chose a different path and may actually wind up taking them down a notch. We’ll see.

Oh well, you have to defeat your opponent in order to win, and you have to break some eggs to make an omelet.

Interesting post, yours. And yes, I will agree that sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. That is particularly true in the primaries.

I suppose I judge all GOP politicians (Trump included) by comparing them with Reagan. Reagan was a master of sly humor and clever story-telling. He rarely insulted anyone.

I know, Trump is not Reagan. Two very different personalities. But Trump could learn a thing or two from the Gipper.

“Reagan was a master of sly humor and clever story-telling. He rarely insulted anyone.”

‘A hippie is someone who looks like Tarzan, walks like Jane and smells like Cheetah.’ - RR

[Re: Gerald Ford -1975] “I played football too, the only difference - I wore a helmet”. - RR

I loved Reagan immensely, and although I know it’s a no-no to say it, I think he and Trump have a lot in common.

The thing about an insult is that if you’re not on the receiving end you might think it’s very funny. I doubt Gerald Ford’s family and supporters liked Reagan’s implication that Ford was brain damaged.

I’m sure millions of ex-hippies didn’t appreciate being told they smelled like apes and walked like girls. Girls, gays, and anyone that wore their hair long back then could have taken offense. If you were a WW2 vet still sporting a crew cut and a suit & tie, I imagine you’d think the comment was hilarious and well deserved.

I laughed my ass off when Trump said “because you’d be in jail”. Very Reaganesque.

Like Trump, Reagan called it the way he saw it, and didn’t bow to political correctness. Reagan made enemies too. We consider him the best POTUS ever, but the other half of the country thinks he was the worst. That he was a dunce, a B actor, a goof, a reckless war monger - they hated it when he called the USSR the evil empire.
