A pair of parallel events occurred last night that perfectly capture the surreal and troubling times in which we are living.
First, President Trump held a rally in Phoenix, in which he once again offered unto his base the reddest of red meat.
Theyre trying to take away our culture, he said, of the exploding debate over Confederate statues and monuments.
Theyre trying to take away our history. And our weak leaders, they do it overnight. These things have been there for 150 years, for a hundred years. You go back to a university and its gone. Weak, weak people.
Simultaneously, on the other side of the country, something else was happening. ESPN was scrambling to release a statement on a baffling assignment change that a sports website had caught wind of.
The decision to remove an Asian-American announcer named Robert Lee from calling University of Virginias home opener simply because of the coincidence of his name, as ESPN inexplicably admits unsurprisingly lit up the Internet with outrage, jokes and memes.....

Trump won? That’s surprising coming from the Daily Snooze.
I think when Time does their man of the year...it’ll end up some Robert E Lee statue taking first place. A dead guy....dead for over 150 years...made into stone...and now the most recognized character after Trump and Sponge Bob.
Ugh. So tired of millennials saying “surreal.”
And wearing glasses to look smart.
You don’t know how many plain, non-prescription glasses my wife used to sell to Millennials as an optical store manager.
Did I miss something?
I think girls who wear glasses are hot (Mrs. Chandler wears glasses.)
S.E. Cupp is ugly. I mean, fervent NeverTrump ugly.
If she walks down a beach, clams slam shut.
But I too, like a spectacled lass. But not S.E. Cupp.
Lol...like freight trains taking dirt roads!
“I think girls who wear glasses are hot (Mrs. Chandler wears glasses.)”
Sometimes they do look hotter for wearing glasses. And sometimes they actually need them to see. The girls who don’t NEED them, should leave that affect to the attractive women with poor vision. IMHO.
1979 is gen x.
Cupp used to be a very spirited, sharp conservative writer. It’s a shame that she’s become an embittered “whatever”.
She is excusing the communists/black racists and psychopathic anarchists (some of whom are a weird type of Marxist), from coming to Charlottesville to “fight”. They had weapons, protective gear, long poles for offensive use, gas masks, and things to throw.
Pres. Trump was right to point this out.
As for the Nazis, Klan (were they there, hard to see them), white racists, and other losers, what did you expect from their demonstration other than stupid hate and illiteracy?
The Extreme Right wanted to taunt the liberals and the Left. The Far Left wanted to perpetrate physical violence (as they have done in Ferguson, Baltimore, Phila, Boston, Durham, etc.
It doesn’t take a genius to see that the reds were better organized, armed (except for the rifles of the Open carry and local “militia” whatevers), and that they would attack anyone they didn’t like, including the police.
S.E. Time to wake up and stop drinking the Left’s and Never Trumpers’ Kool Aid. It does not serve you well.
She writes that she is a conservative, but also that Trump’s Charlottesville speech was divisive and she wobbles around the removal of Civil War statues being a reasonable move. She’s not conservative.
LOL!
LOL, try to keep up Jeff !
The growing what? Are you kidding?
The issue is grotesque but explicable if we consider that it is an attempt to inoculate the public against legitimate grievances over the virulent torrent of hatred directed against white people that has become oh so trendy in academia and the media. If you speak up, you're a white supremacist.
It won't work. The whole Capture The Narrative thing went away when the media at large threw away their credibility on this and so many other issues. There are precious few white supremacists, but there is a growing body of discontent at the vicious, tendentious, racist crap thrown out as social theory. That isn't going to be spun away and it won't be forgotten when the '18 elections come around.
“growing scourge of white supremacy in this country,
Did I miss something?”
Look around, haven’t you noticed that nonwhites cannot get into a decent school? Don’t you see all the nonwhites who are turned down for employment simply because of their race? Don’t you see that the media deliberately slant stories to make white people look better? Are you blind?
“And wearing glasses to look smart.”
The glasses, shaved heads with little beards make me think of Lenin.
