The Left's Obsession With Obscenity
Front Page Magazine ^ | June 19, 2017 | Mark Tapson, Editor of Truth Revolt

“The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing,” declared George Washington, “is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it.” Theodore Roosevelt concurred: “Profanity is the parlance of the fool. Why curse when there is such a magnificent language with which to discourse?” The answer is that profanity is a useful substitute for discourse when one is losing a debate and needs to trump reason with passionate intensity in order to win. That is what is happening in the current degraded state of our national political conversation.

I’m not talking about the cursing that the average American citizen may do in private, which is common enough on both sides of the political fence. I’m not talking about a careless slip of the tongue during a radio interview, or being caught on an open mic letting loose with a profanity. I’m talking about an entire political party which gleefully embraces swearing in speeches and protests, on social media and clothing slogans, in news media and entertainment. I’m talking about public figures from entertainers to talk show hosts to politicians intentionally and unapologetically hurling obscenities.

It should come as no surprise that that political party is the Democratic Party, which is in the grip of the far left, and that those public figures are invariably so-called Progressives.

Needless to say, the following examples come with a maximum-level language alert.....

Cursing is an emotional thing.

When I curse, I know it’s either because I’m angry or wrong or frustrated.

Dems are all three.

If I curse when speaking about someone (I AM trying to stop) it means I REALLY dislike that person.

Dems REALLY, viscerally dislike Trump. Hate is a better word.

It’s so ironic, moochelle’s famous statement “When they go low, we go high”

####ing hypocrites. Yes, I’m mad. So I cursed!

Better men don’t curse when they are angry. I admire them.

What makes something profanity? I mean, why is s word swearing and POOP is not although they mean the same thing?

This has been a pet peeve of mine for decades.

I am an ordained minister. Having never been wealthy, and having worked in blue-collar jobs while in lay ministry in my youth (a la Saul and his tents), I was exposed to extreme and frequent profanity.

I do not recall ever “swearing” before the age of, say, 24. I have seldom - not never - done so since.

I am therefore not seeking to justify something that is virtually absent from my life.

Profanity means of the profane: the opposite of the divine.

Most of what is called profanity or swearing is in fact merely vulgarity. It may be distasteful or disrespectful, but it is not profanity, and it is not swearing.

Swearing is invoking the authority of a power as a witness to a vow.

If I say, “God damn you!” to someone, that is both profanity (abusing God’s name) and swearing (invoking God’s authority).

Contrary to Political Correctness, we all judge, as in evaluate; in fact, we are commanded to do so as Christians. But we are not to judge, as in condemn. That is solely God’s prerogative.

If I say, “The police are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t,” then that is decidedly neither profanity nor swearing. To be damned is to be cast out. If that casting out is in a temporal context, without abusing Divine Authority, then it is not swearing - period!

Real “cuss” words are curse words. The same standard applies. If there is in fact no genuine cursing taking place, then it is not a curse - period!

Some of the notoriously-banned seven words are not cursing, not profanity, not swearing.

They are merely verbal vulgarity. Some of that is strictly cultural and historical: Anglo-Saxon words are generally regarded as more vulgar - more common - than French words for the same thing.

(I am not here addressing the intent of the heart. That is a separate issue.)

I am much more uncomfortable with all the ways we take the Lord’s name in vain (straightforward and euphemism) than the vulgarities. The more we fill the ears of our youth with disrespect and disregard for the Maker and Savior of the universe the harder it will be to get them to regard and respect anything as precious.

There are some interesting comparative linguistic studies on the subject of “bad words.” In some cultures, terms related to sex are considered the worst. In others, it’s bodily excretions, while others frown most on misuse of religious terms.

I once read a quote a long time ago and long since forgot who even penned it, but it had a profound effect on me. “The use of profanity is an indication of someone who cannot express oneself correctly in the English language”. That pretty well sums up todays society. Listening to people in public speaking I wonder if they were even awake in school when English was being taught.

Vulgarity is the effort of a feeble mind to express itself
forcefully.

Done my share of cussing - I try to remember a sign I saw on a wall some years ago:

Profanity is a weak mind
trying to express itself.

You are correct.

There are many studies that show the left is much angrier and more emotional than the right.

again

Now try to imagine Tea Party protesters leading each other in chants of ‘F--- Hillary Clinton!”

None on our side are that insane. At least I hope not.

I didn’t know that.

But it makes sense.

They don’t have God to help them.

Many likely deep down hate God.

Funny thing is everyone was sure some “redneck” was gonna shoot obama.

Hypocrites.

That seems to be, through Multiple trial and error for me, the ONLY way life gets better.

I’ve tried hedonism. The dopamine hits get lesser and lesser and you need more and more (booze, women, drugs, gambling) to get the same high.

And you always crash and burn sooner or later.

Thanks goodness there’s usually a Bible nearby where you crashed.

They are like children that hate any restraint on them. So any moral authority is hateful.

This very forum has a lot more of a certain word than it did even a few years ago. I just saw an example in a thread where I wasn’t expecting one, and I was reminded that I haven’t posted anything in this thread yet.

I pretty much figured the pearl-clutchers would be on this thread in full force.

Grow the F-up -- The Left is winning in this country (see the last 50+ years), and they use vulgarity like "sh**-through-a-Christmas-Goose", as my dad likes to say. Profanity is the dagger with which to drive the message home to those who would, otherwise, not hear it.

Sorry, but using vulgarity has absolutely ***Z-E-R-O*** negative bearing on the message being given. If people can't see past a word or two, than I would argue that they aren't bright enough to receive the intended message anyways...

Vulgarity can give a message of passion, conviction, and, emphasis, when attempting to present a point - or more - a fundamental right of the people. We need to speak to the people in their own "language" -- and if that means more profanity, then who-the-hell am I to judge?

Look around --- you have both political Parties, the Media, Corporate America, the Fed, the EU, and, *every* other major world power-broker against Trump. Last I checked, the Republican's control both Houses of Congress ----- Why the *****F-*-*-K!!!!!***** can't we even get votes on the Nominees he has presented to a Republican-controlled Congress?

By all means, go on standing on ceremony - continue to impress - your opponents. They laugh at you as they kill the "President" on-stage in New York, as they shoot his personage in a popular music video, as they take photos of a political oppenent holding his bloody severed-head in their hand, as members of his party are shot down in cold-blood, as famous celebrities "dream" of clubbing him with a golf-club, or dreamt many times of "burning the White House down", or using [THE VERY VULGARITY THAT YOU RESIST] the phrase that Trump is nothing more than "Putin's co**-holster" ---------- and on, and On, and *O-N*, and ***ON***!!!

There is a place for God's Kingdom - and - a place for ours. If you must clutch-your-pearls because of a bad word, or two, then "get-the-hell-out-of-the-way". Some of us are ready to meet these mother-f***ers on their own turf -- our eternal souls be damned (so to speak). I believe in the God-Given rights that He Entrusted us with, and will use *EVERY* power in my human arsenal to accomplish that right.

And if you, and the liberal-scum, don't like it --- F-off!!!!!.....

You are the WORST writer and the most misdirected and going in every direction poster I’ve ever seen! :)

Don’t remember your name and I’m on a lot.

You’re awful bro.

The left is losing every election that comes along.

If you want to curse like a classless idiot, go ahead

It would be fitting for you :)

So are you saying that the Left is winning the culture war because the right does not swear?
