No, Bernie Sanders Would Not Have Beaten Trump
The Huffington Post ^ | December 15, 2016 | Marcus Johnson

By now, who hasn’t heard a Bernie supporter or surrogate claim that Sanders would have won the election against Donald Trump? The Sanders wing of the Democratic Party has developed a narrative that the Democratic Party was held back by Hillary Clinton. They claim that she was fatally flawed, that the DNC stole the nomination from Sanders, and that the ever so coveted white working class voter dislodged by globalization will never again vote for corporate interests.

Of course, this narrative ignores the facts—that despite Clinton’s supposed flaws, she easily defeated Sanders in the primary via the pledged delegate count, that Sanders inability to convince minority voters doomed his campaign for the nomination, and that the attempt to use superdelegates to override the popular vote was an undemocratic power grab.

And the white workers whose supposed “hate for corporate interests” led them to vote for Trump? They don’t seem upset that Trump has installed three Goldman Sachs executives in his administration. They don’t seem to be angry that Trump’s cabinet is the wealthiest in US history. And we haven’t heard any discontent from the white working class over Trump choosing an Exxon Mobil CEO for Secretary of State.

The devil is in the details, and at first glance, it is easy to see why so many people can believe that Bernie actually would have won. He got a great deal of positive media coverage as the underdog early on, especially with Republicans deliberately eschewing attacks on him in favor of attacks on Clinton. His supporters also trended younger and whiter, demographics that tend to be more visible in the media around election time. A highly energized and vocal minority of Sanders supporters dominated social media, helping him win online polls by huge margins....

I’m more than willing to say Bernie would have won. Gives me more to laugh about.

Bernie Sanders was horribly wronged by the Clinton machine. They literally screwed him out of the Democrat nomination. Our brave Democrat Hamilton Electors owe it to the country to cast their electoral votes for Bernie.

It would have been hilarious, that’s for sure. The elites in both parties would have had something in common - both groups would have hated their nominee.

No way Bernie could have beaten Trump, and I don’t think anyone else could have beaten Hillary. Maybe Huckabee, he’s beaten the Clintons before. But I doubt it.

Bernie would not have won. The Hispanic votes and other minorities would have been a problem. But Biden would've had a real chance with a good campaign. He would have had a real chance at getting Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, maybe Ohio.

I have always thought that Hillary would have won if she had picked Bernie as her VP instead of Kaine.

I agree with the author that Bernie likely would have lost like Hillary—as I just don’t think the U.S. is ready for a full-blown, self-proclaimed socialist, much less one that old. I think the author is misunderstanding something though. The issue wasn’t that most working-class people harbor “hate for corporate interests.” I think they hate corporate backed corruption of politics of the sort that Hillary (but not Bernie) was involved in.

If Trump’s businessmen appointees start displaying signs of corruption and selling their office, then I’m sure they will turn on them too. If the businessmen use their experience to create more jobs and not deepen the swamp, then many in the working class will love them.

“The Bern” would have lost for most of the same reasons the beest lost.

I’ve thought since the election that it was great news for us that Biden decided not to run, because I think he would have been a much better candidate than Hillary with the sort of cross-over voters that put Trump over the top. I don’t know that he would have taken Ohio, which Trump won with such a huge margin, but I totally agree Biden would have had a great shot at keeping PA, WI, and MI blue, which would have left Trump 10 electoral votes short of 270.

Biden has never really been hit because he’s never been relevant. It’s always easy to be the beloved candidate that might have been. When McCain ran Romney would have done much better and when Romney ran Jeb could have made the case. I’ve heard THAT before. It’s not to say that Biden couldn’t have won but we just don’t know because it never happened and he was never criticized. He never had the spotlight on him. For the record, he ran against Obama and Hillary in 2k8 and got 1% of the vote.

Biden was the scary candidate. Odds are, he would have beat Trump.

I don’t think it would have made a difference who their candidate was. You can’t stop devine intervention. Like someone said on another post, “We seriously dodged a bullet.” We definitely did. We dodged it in all 3 branches. Not a single democrat could have stopped it, because we had help in higher places. God loves a working man.

Trump would not have lost to any of them or any combination of them. This was meant to be.

No doubt. Kaine brought absolutely nothing to the ticket. Sanders would have had the snowflakes that were brushing up their gaming skills on 11/8 lined up around the block to vote for him.

Hillary’s hubris doomed her. She should have gotten a clue from Trumps pounding of 100 million Jeb that money couldn’t buy the Whitehouse against Trump.
