Are you really shocked? Don’t be. Everytown is actually the last of the major gun-control groups to endorse Hillary Clinton in this cycle; the Brady Campaign and Gabby Giffords’ Americans for Responsible Solutions endorsed Hillary way back in January, as The Hill’s Tim Devaney points out. What took them so long?
Michael Bloomberg’s gun control group is endorsing Hillary Clinton for president.
Everytown for Gun Safety said Friday it is backing Clinton, just days before her California primary challenge with Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.).
“Hillary Clinton is the only candidate who is willing to take on the gun lobby,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, which is partnered with Everytown.
“Donald Trump talks about making America great again, but Hillary Clinton has made it clear she’s going to make America safe again,” Watts told The Hill.
Clinton foreshadowed this yesterday by donning orange — as the campaign noted:

Again, the endorsement isn’t surprising, but the timing is still curious. Donald Trump began talking up Second Amendment defenses weeks ago, and no one seriously thinks that a gun-control group would ever endorse a Republican for president. But even in the Democratic primary, the lines seemed pretty clear for these single-issue voters since last year. Thanks to his need to represent Vermont, Bernie Sanders has crossed up the gun-grabbers for years in Congress, and the contrasts between his track record and Hillary’s positions in the primaries have been stark for months.
So why now? Maybe some at Everytown and Gun Sense were holding out hope that Michael Bloomberg himself would rescue them from a Hillary Clinton/Donald Trump binary choice in the general election. At any rate, this is clearly a reluctant endorsement, so much so that Team Hillary might be a little embarrassed to have it get much attention at this late stage of the campaign.

Curiously, she thinks she will do that by leaving the borders wide open and disarming American citizens.
