Ted Cruz and Donald Trump Have Deepest Pockets Ahead of ‘Super Tuesday’
The New York Times ^ | February 21, 2016 | Nicholas Confessore and Sarah Cohen

A seven-month, $220 million surge of spending on behalf of mainstream Republican candidates has yielded a primary battle dominated by Donald J. Trump and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, two candidates reviled by most of the party's leading donors.

Now, as they approach a pivotal and expensive stage of the campaign, the two insurgent candidates -- who have won the first three contests -- appear to be in the best position financially to compete in the twelve states that will vote on "Super Tuesday," according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday.

Mr. Cruz is the best financed candidate in the Republican race, beginning February with $13.6 million in cash on hand. Mr. Trump, a billionaire, has raised millions of dollars from small donors and lent himself millions more, including nearly $5 million in January, a month in which he paid out more than $11.5 million, the most sustained spending of his presidential bid so far.

The reports also showed that the candidates backed most lavishly by wealthy establishment-leaning Republican donors burned through much of the cash they accumulated last year, beginning the month deeply depleted. Those remaining in the race on Sunday, Gov. John Kasich of Ohio and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, had less than $7 million in cash between them....

Rubio’s pockets will be full within the week now that the establishment lane is decided. Bush is out. The resources will be extensive for Rubio going forward.

Now hold on a garshdarned minute - I thought Trump was 'self-funded' and didn't need anyone else's money.

You mean he is getting money from other people?

Rubio will get cash, but I don’t know how much. Bush flushed $150 million, and Rubio needs to be able to show a path to victory despite not winning a state yet.

If I were a rich GOPe guy, I’d be sitting on my hands. This doesn’t seem to be a cycle where people are interested in GOPe policy and goals.

Odd statement in that Jeb & Hillary have led in bringing in the dough.

This can't be true. The Crusor Losers assured us that Trump would never spend any of his money.

Of course. The statement said best financed and didn't have a modifier like best financed still left in the race.

Rubio has:

GOPe Cash

Media protection

Margin for error because the Gope controls the levers.

Trump will string him along, with the occasional wack from his rolled-up newspaper, until the right moment.

Do you have the SLIGHTEST understanding that Trump (BLESSED BE HIS NAME) is merely LENDING money to his campaign. He will be paid back that LOANED money from FUTURE campaign funds. Those FUTURE campaign funds will be from OTHER PEOPLE that will donate to his campaign-—and, bet you dollars to donuts, those campaign funds won’t be from “the little people”.

We can be such GULLIBLE FOOLS at times.

Trump is getting some money from small donors, unsolicited, who don’t want to influence Trump but want to make a statement of support.
