Because Christie won't hurt Trump, and might siphon off a vote or two from Cruz. Besides, this provides cover for any quid pro quo accusations over Branstad throwing in with Trump after Trump's support of ethanol (coming directly on the heels of Cruz saying he would seek repeal of the mandate).

I believe he appeared with all the candidates at some point. Appearing with Christie the night before caucus looks like more fun and games by the GOPe
