The fact that we are a representative republic (and for good, well thought out reasons) does offer protection against a cult of personality election and the risk of mob rule that can happen in a Democracy. But the founders trusted Americans enough to fashion a Democratically elected representative Republic. So, yes, I believe they trusted the electorate more than you. Add to that it is only POTUS that requires the NBC status.
