Like many of his rivals for the Republican nomination, Ted Cruz has embraced the mantle of Ronald Reagan. He regularly cites the Gipper as an inspiration, and last week gave a foreign policy address at the Heritage Foundation that was laced with tributes to him: âAs Reagan knew well, the best way to project Americaâs leadership is by protecting and promoting Americaâs strength and this principle should always guide our actions.â
I didnât know Ronald Reagan (neither did Cruz), but I do know a lot about him. And from what I know, itâs fair to say that Ted Cruz is no Ronald Reagan. In many ways, he is actually an anti-Reagan.
Start with tone. Ronald Reagan was famous for espousing the 11th Commandment: âThou shall not speak ill of any fellow Republican.â Ted Cruzâs entire political career has been founded on speaking ill of fellow Republicans. He has gone so far as to directly and repeatedly attack the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell â a staunch conservative â accusing him of âlyingâ and of being a âvery effective Democratic leader.â He has been equally vitriolic in his attacks on John Boehner, even criticizing him after he had resigned the speakership.
Now Cruz has moved onto attacking Senator Marco Rubio, claiming that the terrorist attack in Benghazi was a âdirect resultâ of Rubioâs support for the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. (Full disclosure: Iâm a foreign policy adviser to Rubio and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, which Cruz has denounced as a ânest of vipers.â) Just about the only politician Cruz refuses to attack is Donald Trump, who is the least conservative candidate in the entire presidential field....

Cruz is a great orator and American. I could vote for him but it’s Trump first
He is upset that Cruz called McConnell a liar. He doesn’t consider the question, whether in fact McConnell is a liar. And a serial liar at that.
He doesn’t consider what led a senator to call him out in public for twenty minutes in front of God and everyone. You’d think, if he was going to attack Cruz based on his attack on McConnell, he’d want to know the facts of the case. Boot doesn’t seem interested to know.
Because to Trumps point it’s irrelevant if McConnell is a liar or not. As long as the alleged liar is holding a position of power you must negotiate with him. Perhaps calling him out on the senate floor may not be beneficial to future negotiations.
Oh, McConnell is a Republican? Could’ve fooled me.
If there is anyone up there that deserves Reagan’s mantle, the Conservative Mantle, it is Cruz. There is no other.
Cruz is no Reagan.
And Abe Lincoln was no George Washington.
If he lied to Trump in a negotiation, and failed to fulfill the bargain he made, it matters a great deal. Trump would have his head on a platter.
And thats what happened. Trump doesn’t suffer betrayal either. McConnell should pay a price.
He’s a lot closer to Reagan than anyone else running. And we need another Reagan not another PT Barnum.
Nah, more like a mirror image, complete with the part in his hair.
No one running is.....but he’s the closest thing to it.
Cruz could be better than Reagan.
Reagan screwed up by letting Congress off the hook concerning immigration. Reagan got bent over the chair so to speak.
Though he did make up for it in other areas, IMO.
I don’t trust Cruz on immigration reform and Muslim refugees.
