Capitol Insider: Koch brothers’ Columbus event to have 5 GOP candidates, not Kasich (Or Walker)
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | August 16, 2015 | Darrel Rowland

Five Republican presidential candidates are appearing in Columbus this week, but not one of them is named John Kasich.

Americans for Prosperity, bankrolled by GOP mega-donors Charles and David Koch, is snubbing the Ohio governor at its Defending the American Dream summit at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Even a state representative from Florida and Jon Taffer — host of Spike TV’s Bar Rescue — are making the stage instead of Kasich.

Slated to speak on Friday are former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. Saturday’s gathering will hear from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan of Urbana also is on Friday’s agenda, while Ohio Sen. Rob Portman is slated to speak on Saturday.

Among the breakout sessions at the Koch brothers’ get-together is one on “Don’t Be That Guy! Managing Your Brand,” with panelists including a Fox New contributor and a National Rifle Association News reporter. Another is “Don’t Let Them Tell Your Story — Countering the Left Narratives.”

Meanwhile, the Ohio AFL-CIO is busing in supporters from around the state to protest the group’s support of “right to work” initiatives.

The national news media are discovering John Kasich.

And so far, many are pushing story lines that perhaps are new on the national scene but are old news to Ohioans who have been following the Republican governor.

For example, CNN seized on Kasich’s remarks last week that he won’t rule out a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Actually, he had voiced that position as long ago as last year’s Republican Governors Association meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., and numerous times since at campaign stops.

The National Journal jumped on Kasich’s pledge to shy away from attacks on his opponents, including Hillary Clinton. The governor had said the same thing several times before, including at an early June event in Portsmouth, N.H. — although the next day he bashed Clinton over a voting lawsuit filed by her campaign’s attorney against Ohio.

Even the Democratic National Committee has become aware that a guy named Kasich is running for president, and that he might have a shot.

The party’s counterpunchers said, “Just this week, John Kasich unveiled his own extreme plan to cut benefits for baby boomers” to fix Social Security.

That actually was months ago. In fact, it’s pretty much the same idea he discussed back in the 1990s when he was in Congress.

Dispatch Public Affairs Reporter Alan Johnson will be on CNN at 10 tonight as part of the series Death Row Stories. Johnson, who has witnessed 20 executions, shares his eyewitness account of the troubled execution of Dennis McGuire on Jan. 16, 2014.

McGuire’s execution, in which the condemned man coughed, gasped, choked and struggled against his restraints for 13 minutes, is Ohio’s most-recent one. It caused prison officials to rethink the lethal-injection process. In McGuire’s case, that involved two drugs never used before in combination in an execution in the U.S.

The series, narrated by actress Susan Sarandon and produced by Robert Redford, examines nationwide issues related to capital punishment.

What do they use to put pets to sleep and why wouldn't that work on convicts?

As deterrent and to be clear about what we are doing, executions should be by hanging in the public square at noon, not in the middle of the night, hidden, etc. And 13 minutes to day? oh well, life happens. Or, in this case, he did eventually die so I don’t think he cares anymore.

A firing squad might be appropriate as well. So, the guy choked? I wonder how his victims died? These bleeding hearts make me sick.

I thought associating with the Koch brothers meant you were open borders, pro-amnesty.

Oh, that is only when Walker is getting praise from the Koch brothers.....when Cruz is cozy with the Koch brothers, it is a serious, conservative event.

I understand now.

Pentobarbital is used by veterinarians. It does work on people, but the manufacturers do not allow it to be sold for death penalty cases. It could be purchased on the black market, but that opens a different can of worms.

Do they still sell 7.62 or 30.06 ammunition or hempen rope?

Not a big deal. Cruz was sinking and came back as well. Its a long way to go for all of them.

Trump criticized Rubio for wanting to double H1-B visas....I wonder what he will say about Cruz wanting to increase H1-Bs by 500%?

Can't wait.

Kasich is a mold or a fungus.

He has governed Ohio just like the Gayvernator, Ted Strictland did.

I disagree. The left wants a spectacle to turn public opinion against justice.

Make execution quick, painless and botch proof. Ceiled room, replace oxygen with inert gas. Monster goes to sleep. Monster is gone.

I’m sure they do sell it, but not sure how most state laws are written... do they allow hangings and firing squads?
