Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican presidential candidate, is set to announce his North Carolina-based leadership group, including several activists who previously worked with Lt. Gov. Dan Forest and a civil rights leader who was involved in the Greensboro sit-ins. The campaign said it had recruited evangelical and Tea Party leaders.
The Cruz campaign tells Dome that Cruz was looking for leaders to add to grassroots momentum and to help him raise money and compete for the nomination.
A formal announcement is expected Tuesday to include:
▪ USMC Lieutenant Colonel William Bill and Velvet Cowan (Ret.) of Mt. Airy.
Cowan is a retired Marine Corps officer and Vietnam veteran. He has experience in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East serving as a field operator for covert missions.
Velvet is a co-founder of NC Tea 411, a statewide action alert network. She served as Forests statewide Tea Party coalition leader, and is active in the North Carolina Federation of Republican Women and Surry County GOP.
▪ David & Tracy Bengtson of Davidson.
David and Tracy Bengtson are longtime activists. Tracy is a homeschool mom who is a co-founder of NC Tea 411, a statewide action alert network, and served on Forests statewide leadership team.
David is an engineer and small business owner. He has served on the Cabarrus County GOP Executive Committee and as GOP District Chair.
David and Tracy have also served as full-time missionaries in a disaster relief effort.
▪ Tim and Judy Daughtry of Yanceyville
Formerly a clinical psychologist, Tim Daughtry is a conservative author, political speaker and pundit.
Judy, a longtime conservative political activist, spent her career in Human Resources Management. The Daughtrys are small-business owners providing leadership and management consulting services to organizations.
▪ Clarence Henderson of High Point
A civil rights activist throughout the 1960s, Henderson joined the 1960 sit-in at the Woolworths lunch counter in Greensboro. He is now a busy local activist volunteering and fundraising for the Boy Scouts of America, North Carolina A&T State University, Bennett College and Dudley High School.
▪ Paul Valone of Raleigh
Valone has been political activist for more than a decade is a longtime leader in the gun-rights group Grass Roots North Carolina.
Trump seems to be the topic of the day. If he siphons votes away from Jeb, good. He wont get one conservative vote. I must admit I’d like to see Cruz higher in the polls but the debate will be big.
And he has the media working against him 24/7.
I’ve already gotten 4 converts in the family from Rubio/Bush to Cruz. I’m doing my part.
Cruz isn’t polling where it says he is. Just look at the polling results/internals. The last one from MSNBC only had 300 Republican voters.
Cruz has great grassroots going on in SEVERAL states. He has a ton of money. He keeps getting sold out crowds where he goes.
This is a big Deal as has a good TN Team too. If he carries TN, NC and he runs like he has polled in FLA, he could lock down the south.
That’s good to know. I dont understand the Carson support but suspect that after the debate, he will take a big hit. that is not his forte.
And it is Cruz’ forte.
Definitely. Carson needs to raise money too...he ain’t in the game here.
He definitely has support, but he won’t make it.
As far as Huckabee, I respect those that like him on this board, but his audience on FOX was all over 70.
I think Cruz will appeal much more to all age groups.
