Straw polls used to be just a diversion when some other mundane party business was taking place. Now they’ve become a kind of entertainment in their own right, and might turn into a full-blown ‘reality’ television show with audience voting before this election cycle is over.
Stay tuned for the life sized hologram of Bert Parks looking sharp in his tuxedo, singing,’Here she comes, Miss America!”.
In real terms we could do worse. In completely realistic terms we most assuredly will do worse!
Why does everyone forget President Grant? But of course Presidents Eisenhower and Grant had government experience. The Army is the sword and shield of the government. Without it the government would not exist. And being a flag officer, especially at the top (as Grant and Eisenhower were) is very political. I didn’t say “elective” experience, I said government experience.
He has some good common sense.
It the conservative version of affirmative action (or Confirmative Action), where any semi-conservative black person with an interest in politics is instantly elevated to dream candidate. Because that will show once and for all that Republicans aren't racist. Add to that the fantasy that blacks will have a revelation that their dedication to the Democrat party is all a big mistake, and will vote for a black Republican. For some the dream never dies, so we get people pining for Colin Powell, Condi Rice, J.C. Watts, Herman Cain, and now Ben Carson.
A) There will not be another black president in our lifetime and probably in our children’s lifetimes. (B) What qualifications for the presidency does Dr. Carson have, other than skin color, that I don’t have? (C) Money and time spent on pushing Ben Carson would be much more productive backing a viable candidate.
I think you nailed it!
It’s all noble and nice and it feels good; but we know Carson’s candidacy goes nowhere, right?
It’s a little like almost every high school nowadays makes certain to nominate a downs syndrome girl for prom queen.
Again, it feels nice and is a great gesture; but it renders the whole concept of prom queen almost meaningless.
Of course, the analogy I used is wholly inept as a comparison in any way; Carson is exemplary and highly accomplished; but again, this OKC convention made a splash, like a cannonball dive into the pool; but as everyone towels off afterward, the question has to be asked: now what?.
Like restricting the 2nd Amendment in urban areas?
From bad to worse: Dr. Ben Carson cannot be trusted on gun rights

“This poll was taken among cowed, worn out pollees who just want to go along to get along”
We have a feckless electorate.
Seems like whoever announced last jumps to the front of the preference polling.
I have deep worries about the voting public and what it portends for this once great country.
George Washington?
I don’t know. I’ll bet Clinton was a closet Hello Kitty enthusiast.
Washington was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses for 15 years before the Revolution (1759-1774) and served in the Continental Congress 1774-1775.
Ok. I would be fine with Carson. I think he is very capable of the job.
Washington was appointed by Governor Dinwiddie as one of the four district adjutants in February 1753, with the rank of major in the Virginia militia ...
Washington quickly became a senior officer in the colonial forces during the first stages of the French and Indian War ... adjutant general of the militia ... In 1755, Washington was the senior American aide to British General Edward Braddock on the ill-fated Braddock expedition. This was the largest British expedition to the colonies, and was intended to expel the French from the Ohio Country ...
... was elected to the Virginia provincial legislature, the House of Burgesses, beginning in 1758 ... In July 1774, he chaired the meeting at which the “Fairfax Resolves” were adopted, which called for the convening of a Continental Congress, among other things. In August, Washington attended the First Virginia Convention, where he was selected as a delegate to the First Continental Congress ...
Chosen by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolution ... Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention that devised a new federal government for the United States...
I didn’t say I’d vote for him (I won’t), I’m just trying to understand why he has enough appeal to be a contender, personally I think it’s a hankering after someone who isn’t a slimebag.
It’s a “hankering” to get the media and academia off our backs about being Teathuglican racist KKK members. And it won’t work. If the Republicans somehow elected a minority president and vice president with a totally minority cabinet and congressional leadership the attacks and accusations would not stop for a moment.
