Did John McCain Just Say He Might Run for President Again?

Forget Mitt Romney. Another former Republican presidential candidate is stoking 2016 rumors.

It seemed like another run-of-the-mill interview with a politician on late-night television. Sen. John McCain was on The Colbert Report on Tuesday night to talk about his love of deep-frying turkeys and his new book with Mark Salter, Thirteen Soldiers: A Personal History of Americans at War. At the end of the show, host Stephen Colbert asked McCain if he wanted to be the next Defense secretary. And then McCain dropped the mic.

"Actually, I was thinking about running for president again," he said. "What do you think?"

Colbert looked shocked, as did a few Twitter users who wondered whether they heard right. That's because McCain was likely joking, given the satirical nature of the show. About this time a year ago, the Arizonan said that, despite supporters urging him to run again, another presidential campaign was not on his mind. "I can assure you," he told The Arizona Republic, "I don't see it."

Speculation about McCain's political career has remained in the Senate, where his seat is up in two years. The five-term senator, who will be 80 in 2016, has said he is leaning toward running for reelection. In the meantime, he's got a new job to focus on: chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, where he is expected to continue to criticize the Obama administration's foreign policy.

When and where politicians announce their presidential runs takes a good deal of planning. Blurting it out on Comedy Central at midnight does not. But former Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia recently became the first serious candidate to officially announce his 2016 run, so 'tis the season. We've reached out to McCain's office, just in case.

I’d rather see Dole vs. Mondale in 2016.

Other than bringing Sarah Palin to national attention, Senator McCain’s campaign was a LOSER. He used much of his time reassuring us that Obama was an okay guy and not radical and that we didn’t need to be afraid of him.

What kind of a campaign is that!?

Sorry, John, but we don’t want you to run again.

Posturing. The old fool knows he’s got a tough re-election fight in Arizona coming up so he wants to show he can get some support in the primaries to parlay that into a cabinet position in the next GOP administration. Most likely he’s seeking to be Secretary of Defense so he can follow in the footsteps of his buddy Chucky Hegel.

Forgot Walt (age 86) was still around.

Old leftys with gold plated healthcare seem to go on forever...

Of course James Earl Carter (90) is eligible for another term too.

McCain/Dole/Romney/Bush

Together they make one complete man.

And they could run against another man - Hillary.

McVain isn’t interested in running for president. He is only interested in keeping a conservative running for president.

That'd be the campaign of a guy who's in on the play from the very beginning. There was no opposition to Obama in 2007-2008
