Charlie Rangel: 'The Things We Believe in Are Spiritual Damn Things'
CNS News ^ | October 27, 2014 | Craig Millward

Posted on 10/27/2014 7:53:26 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Speaking at a breakfast sponsored by the Transport Workers Local 100 union in Harlem last week, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) said that union organizing, raising the minimum wage, and unemployment compensation are "spiritual damn things” and he didn't know "where the hell" spiritual leaders were on shelter and homelessness.

"The things we believe in are spiritual damn things. You can talk about the union organizing and raising the minimum wage and extensive unemployment compensation, but isn't that the same thing as talking about someone that's hungry, that's thirsty, that's naked, that's in prison. All of these things – I'm not preaching – are things that people should be involved in and helping the unions make this a better country," he said.

"Now I don't know where the hell the spiritual leaders are going to be, but I haven't heard their voices when it comes to shelter. That has to be a part of Matthews 25th in terms of how do you treat the less of my brothers and sisters,” Rangel said.

Rangel was referring to the Bible verse Matthew 25:40, which says, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

“I haven't heard the church on homelessness, but I have to believe that God didn't intend for some people to live in luxury and other people to live in squalor. I have to believe that there's something that connects Americans like us with the Constitution," he said.

He also told the union that in order for people to have jobs and disposable incomes "it seems to me that you have to go beyond the constitutional pursuit and have workers united to make certain that we get the benefits in order to make this country all that she can be."

So why do you suggest we steal from them for your gain Charlie. What about thou shalt not steal?

Is he spiritual? Not likely.

Is he damned? Not gonna say at this juncture.

Well, he's not wrong.
As James says:
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder. Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith apart from works is barren? Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.

Everything Rangel knows can be found at the bottom of a whiskey bottle.

Careful; just because someone is horrible/evil/wretched doesn't mean that their condemnation is without merit:

(Matt 11:23-24)
And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.

And Jesus spoke:

"Let my people live in Section 8 housing, free of the burdens of working and reading Scripture so they have time to smoke pot and play video games all day. Let the welfare offices give out money freely to those who ask, and tell the working man not to judge the 'enlightened ones'. Should the working man speak out against those who lounge, let the working man be put to death."

THIS IS WHAT LIBERALS ACTUALLY BELIEVE

Absolutely, but that passage is not saying steal from one, to provide for another.

Absolutely true — I'm not saying we should steal, but instead our works and behaviors as Christians should make it ridiculous to level such charges as he did.
That it's not ridiculous on its face when he says Now I don't know where the hell the spiritual leaders are going to be, but I haven't heard their voices when it comes to shelter. means that we, as Christians, aren't living up to our own ideals, no?

Hebrews 13:2
Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

I’m confused, are you trying to say that those in Sodom were spiritual? More spiritual than Rnagle?
