I think most Libertarians self-identify as libertarians. They'd rather get the whole loaf then win, and are often willing to let the Liberals win vice the Republicans because they don't see any difference in the two. It's like arguing with Liberals in the old days of the Cold War about whether totalitarian governments were worse than authoritarian ones. Liberals didn't get it. Some freedom was better than none. A US ally was better than a US enemy. Similarly, Libertarians refused to accept that there is a difference between a conservative Republican and a Liberal Democrat.
