South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley made history Monday when she announced that first-term Congressman Tim Scott is her choice to replace conservative firebrand Jim DeMint in the Senate.
He will be just the second African-American senator from the South since Reconstruction, the only current black senator and the only black Republican in all of Congress.
Scott, 47, has enjoyed a meteoric rise in national politics, but he has big shoes to fill in succeeding DeMint. Elected to Congress in 2010 and re-elected to a second term last month, he was chosen to serve on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said it will take some time before the Steering Committee selects a replacement.

Don’t know much about him other than that he is a “rising star.”
Have heard really good things about him....should make some of those old timers in the Senate squirm
I haven’t seen a lot of him, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen. I think she’s made a good choice.

“”Since being sworn-in for his freshman term on January 5, 2011, Congressman Tim Scott has been a tireless advocate for smaller government, lower taxes, and restoring fiscal responsibility in Washington.
Tim took immediate action the first bill he authored would defund and deauthorize the Presidents health care reform package. He was also named to the influential House Rules Committee, asked to serve as a Deputy Whip and sits as one of two freshmen on the Elected Leadership Committee.
Tim also confronted our nations outdated and cumbersome tax code by sponsoring the Rising Tides Act. This legislation would lower burdensome corporate tax rates that discourage job growth and allow for the permanent repatriation of overseas profits. The latter would encourage American companies to bring home more than $1 trillion dollars that can be used for investment and job creation.
Scott has consistently voted for significant cuts in federal spending, and opposed measures he believes do not go far enough. Tim was an original cosponsor of the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act, which would do just as it says cut spending, cap our spending moving forward based on how much we bring in, and add a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He also cosponsored two stand-alone bills that would create a Balanced Budget Amendment, and voted against raising our nations debt limit.
Tim has also taken a strong stance in support of right-to-work states, and has been an outspoken critic of the National Labor Relations Boards (NLRB) decision to sue Boeing over expanding in right-to-work South Carolina. He authored the Protecting Jobs From Government Interference Act, which was subsequently passed by the House of Representatives, to remove the NLRBs ability to kill jobs. Scott has also sponsored the Employee Rights Act, which ensures all American workers have a voice in the workplace, not just union leaders and Big Labor advocates.
Finally, he is a strong social conservative, cosponsoring multiple bills protecting American family values and reaffirming 2nd Amendment rights.
Prior to being elected to Congress, Tim served on Charleston County Council for 13 years, including four terms as Chair and in the South Carolina House of Representatives for two years where he was elected Chairman of the Freshman Caucus and House Whip. He was the owner of Tim Scott Allstate and partner of Pathway Real Estate Group.””

Some people are horrified at the pick and think it’s political correctness. Is he the smartest guy? Why pick a sitting congressman for a 2 year post instead of a businesswoman or Mark Sanford?

Mark Sanford, the guy who ran off to Argentina and had his staff tell us he was walking in the Appalachians. Tim Scott is a good choice.

Not bad.
I’ve heard him interviewed on Fox a few times. Seems solid. I was sort of hoping for Rep. Joe “YOU LIE!” Wilson so I could see exploding liberal heads, but I like Tim Scott.
I LIKE it!!! He’s a very smart person......hope he doesn’t get ruined by the Democrats.
Proud to say this is one of the first people I voted for who was elected to office. The rest lost their election bid, or was elected when I voted against them...like Graham. Scott is a good man and the perfect example why color not a factor even in SC. I would like to think my little write in campaign to Haley helped. For those of you wondering about Tim Scott, wonder no more ... He is a good man proudly sent to you from SC.
