Shocker: One of CA’s most promising young Republicans abandons GOP in midst of heated SD mayoral race

California State Assemblyman and San Diego mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher, seen as one of the California Republican Party’s most promising future possibilities for statewide office, announced today he’s abandoning the GOP and “partisan politics” to become an independent.

The defection of Fletcher, who served in the Marine Corps for more than a decade and is an Iraq war veteran as well as a spouse of a prominent GOP activist — Mindy Tucker Fletcher, the former campaign spokeswoman for George W. Bush — is an ominous sign for the state Republican Party.

. . .
Fletcher’s move underscores the challenges and internal divisions in a party that now lags 13 points behind Democrats in voter registration in solidly blue California. The San Diego GOP did not endorse Fletcher — seen by many party activists as too moderate — in the San Diego mayoral race, which served as a statewide stepping stone for another moderate Republican, Pete Wilson, who later become U.S. Senator and then governor.

Yeah, real shocking. A politician in California isn’t really a Republican. I’m stunned. (sarc)

I have been thinking long and hard about doing the same thing. We really do not have a party, just a branch of the Democrats.

This is going to happen more and more, especially if Romney (and to a lesser extent, Santorum) becomes the nominee.

I think people are reaching a critical mass of anger with the GOP such that the “who else they gonna vote for/third parties never work out” truisms are simply not going to be valid anymore.

I used to be completely for working within the GOP to capture it back for conservatives, and third partyism/replacing the GOP was anathema to me. Not anymore. Now I’m pretty much swung to the complete opposite end - and I know that if *I* have, then there are a lot of other people, millions perhaps, who feel the same way. There DEFINITELY is a palpable feeling out there among regular people that neither Party truly represents them or has their best interests at heart anymore.

No surprise. “W” was hardly a Republican and in the big picture, neithr is this guy.

Smart man. The GOP in CA is now just a minor regional party anyway.

My sister and brother-in-law in Palm Springs quit the CA GOP a couple months ago.. my brother and his wife quit last year, and my mother left and went indie in `09. If I lived there, I`d be off their rolls too.

I too quit ANY party of Politicians, I also moved out of CA and am still surrounded by Lefties. I am now and probably always will be a non-party-affiliated independent voter for the foreseeable future. The ballot box is the ultimate term limit tool we have. Vote Conservative and pay no attention to party affiliation. If your choice of candidate does not act accordingly, vote in a new one, might take awhile but we can elect leaders.

I am confused. It says the SAN DIEGO GOP did not endorse him because he was too moderate.

That tells me that the SAN DIEGO GOP is GOP-TP and not GOP-E.

So I would think conservatives should support the SD GOP-TP with time and money and congratulate them for having the good sense to jettison a RINO. It’s what needs to be done on a national level.

Am I wrong?

But I thought that Tom Campbell was going to SAVE the California Republican Party, by making it more inclusive...at least for his type.

We do have enemies, called liberals. Matters have gone far beyond mere difference of opinion.
