Robert Allen Mansfield, a sergeant in the National Guard with service in Iraq, has announced he is dropping out of the May 18 Republican primary election to run for governor as an independent.

The state Republican committee voted overwhelmingly, last month, to endorse Attorney General Tom Corbett for the spot.

Still in the primary race is state Rep. Sam Rohrer (R-128)

Mansfield is an African-American from Philadelphia, born in 1971, whose heroine addicted mother put him up for adoption. He spent two years in foster care before being adopted by the Mansfield family.

As a resident of PA, I’m a little disturbed by this. With the Dems cheating that goes on in Philly, we need to have a united front for one candidate. I believe a third-party run will throw this to the Democrat...and we don’t need that.

Too bad... thought there was a chance to wrench this one away from the dems. Guess not.

An African American Republican ran in the last governor’s election — Lynne Swann. I voted for him.

"... born in 1971, whose heroine addicted mother put him up for adoption. He spent two years in foster care before being adopted by the Mansfield family."

In a country where couples beg for ANY baby, why would he be kept in foster care for 2 years? Was he one of those held captive by black social workers who want only black families to adopt black children?

Sad to say that if this man runs as an independent, we here in PA may as well get used to hearing Gov. Dan Onorato (basically Ed Rendell II). Should that happen, I will vomit, but I will be right as I basically felt like Onorato would be Governor someday. He got a ton of “Republican” support here in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh, PA area). While he’s passed a few laws here in the County that drive people nuts, the Philadelphia area, including dead people, will love this man. Couple that with an Independent taking votes from Corbett, well, we’re doomed.

I don't think he's going to keep Corbett from winning. His running, however, might keep Corbett from veering to the left.

And I think he might be very helpful in getting a conservative message to blacks. I think it's as likely that he takes black votes from the Dem than he takes conservative votes from Corbett.

Agree with your first point - Corbett should beat Dan 'Empty Suit' Onorato with or without third party interference.

As an Allegheny County resident I am well aware of what a scumbag High-Tax Danny is, and I am also well aware of Massive Democrat Vote Fraud ® in the Pittsburgh and Philly ghettos and among ACORN racists and SEIU union thug types, but Corbett is still in a good position, RINO-ish though he is.

I know nothing about Mansfield aside from what's posted here, but I'd like to see him in Harrisburg.

As to the second point, any black votes going to Mansfield will be negligible, not to mention totally accidental.

I think that's his real intent. I think he's a fake conservative sent in to disrupt the election and make the Dem win.

You either win in the primary, or don't run.

“And I think he might be very helpful in getting a conservative message to blacks. I think it’s as likely that he takes black votes from the Dem than he takes conservative votes from Corbett.”

We’ll see. Swann didn’t do much for PA. I think he only got 39% of the vote. That empty suit lughead Casey slaughtered Santorum. I had expected Lynn Swann to do MUCH better, but the RNC basically ignored him and he ran a campaign with virtually no money or support. I voted for the man, but Rendell could have raped a chicken on television and still won that election. Santorum got the same treatment. While I think they were going to lose no matter what, they really shouldn’t have had their asses handed to them like that.

Corbett is about as good as you will get in PA for Governor this year. Toomey has a decent chance to rid us of Specter (that’d be a great win ... he’d be a fantastic Senator and we rid ourselves of Lex Luthor). Quite honestly, Toomey is the only one I am fired up to vote for.

However, the risk of splitting up the conservative/Republican vote for the Gov. Mansion isn’t worth taking with a right leaning 3rd party on the ticket....PA is going to lose a seat or two in the House and I would much rather have a Republican Governor like Corbett than a bona-fide “let’s tax Universities and poured drinks to drive even more people out of W. PA while throwing all that money away on a pile of $&%^ public transit system that bleeds cash” idiot like Onorato carving up the friggin’ Congressional districts (I loathe gerrymandering ... people whine about incumbents all of the time ... gerrymandering districts plays a huge part in that).

Rendell probably conjured up every dead person and their extended families dating all the way back to ancient Egypt to vote in 2006 to insure he got his kickbacks from the slot machine licenses ;-) (conspiracy kook mode ... I have no proof of that). That could explain the lob sided vote totals :-). Still, Rendell is going to carry some weight this election with his endorsement of the weasel of Allegheny County (or whoever gets nominated by the Neo-commu-nazi party) and weakening the right wing side of the ticket with a candidate capable of splitting the vote is just not good news.

Please understand that I am not one of those people that just votes Republican cause I have to. I simply think the stakes are too high this year due to redistricting. It’s either Murtha’s old district gets axed and spread out among the more conservative regions north of Pittsburgh, or Johnstown will dominate a new Congressional district that eliminates a Republican seat. I could also see a Dem weakening Tim Murphy’s district too.

Oh well, enough rambling. I should learn not to post on FR at 3AM.

I thought it was a pretty good 3 AM post. :-)

I'm going to almost certainly vote for Corbett despite what I said earlier, but I'm not worried about this guy's third party run. Look at the Brown & Christie races. The third-party guy might have even been helpful to the conservative cause.

In the Brown debates, the libertarian-type fellow helped level the playing field regarding ideas about public spending.
