Why should I?
Has he pushed amnesty (a violation of the rule of law) or campaign finance "reform" (an abridgement of the First Amendment protection of free speech) or cap-and-tax? Did he vote for the bailouts like McCain?
I'm not going to judge someone based on a number, whether that number is an SAT score, a GPA, or an ACU rating for an arbitrary length of time.
I voted third-party in 2008, newbie, and I distinctly remember going four hours out of my way by car to cast my absentee ballot in my home district against McCain *AND* against Obama.

I know what you mean. I am tired of being told that we must vote for sellouts like McCain because they have an R behind their names. In Wisconsin, they are babbling about running Tommy Thompson. The conservative talk show hosts all talk about Thompson being a “reliable” vote. That’s just it - when it comes to quislings like McCain, Snowe, Collins, Graham, and the ever popular weathervane, Arlen Specter, they are not reliable conservative votes. They are the reason the Republican Party and the nation is in trouble.

Just want to state that McCain is FAR FAR less than perfect for those conservatives that like to claim McCain opponents are “purists.”
McCain himself is the cause of the dissension in Republican ranks. He’s the problem here, not those of us who want him removed from office.
There’s no doubt McCain carries weight in the senate. That’s pretty much obvious. So what? Do we excuse everything the man does simply because he throws a crumb our way once in awhile?
If anyone is a purist here, it’s someone who claim that we MUST support the Republican label. It doesn’t matter if that carton of McCain milk is LONG curdled so long as it’s the Republican brand, right? Get a grip folks!
McCain is the enemy of conservatives. He’s even said as much. He’s even more dangerous than the left, because at least they leave no doubt which side they are on.
If Sarah Palin somehow gives McCain enough votes to put him over the top, mark my words: he’s going to be a pain in our rear for the next SIX years. Count ‘em folks. That’s six more years of back stabbing we’ll all have to endure!
Clearly, Sarah’s support is reciprocity for McCain’s having tapped her for VP and elevating her to the national stage. She’s in a tough spot here and I don’t envy her or hold it against her. I would hope, however, that her appearances for him would be as luke-warm as the McCain staff attacks on her during and after the campaign were vicious.
Brown is a similar but less intense situation. I would hope that Brown would see that McCain’s coming in to help him in Mass. was McCain’s having read the pre-election polls and saw that Brown reoresented a sea-change there from which he, McCain, could later profit — by indebting Brown to later help in the AZ race.

This is my biggest fear. Most Americans don’t follow politics like we do, and even conservative leaning folks who don’t follow politics much are likely to be swayed by Palin. She alone could take Hayworth down with her popularity.

That is PRECISELY what Snake McCain figured.
Palin is sending mixed signals at best by pronouncing conservative ideals while at the same time endorsing McAmnesty who votes with the socialist RATs on many of the issues.
Reagan or no, I'm going to have to disagree with you. Since 2000, McCain has been one of the most consistently anti-conservative "Republicans" in the Senate. He has done everything within his power to not only promote anti-conservative positions (CFR, amnesty, fiscal profligacy, etc.) that are destructive both to his own Party in the long run, but also to the long-term health of America's middle class, conservative foundation.
Why has he done so? Because of his grudge against conservatives who helped hand SC to Bush in 2000, shooting down his presidential aspirations ten years ago.
On the basis of that vindictiveness alone, the ideological leftism not withstanding, he deserves to be removed from office.
Even to this day, McCain is pushing the effort to completely undue all the advances that conservatives have made within the Republican Party, trying to return/keep the GOP headed towards the "moderate" direction that has, so far, only served to destroy the Party's standing with its own base, and handed us electoral defeats. Any true conservative Republican should want to see McCain become a footnote in history, post haste.

You cite Reagan, but the John McCain that Reagan worked with when the Senator was in the House was not the same John McCain we see today. Back then, he actually was conservative. Today, McCain is just a vindictive, left-leaning jerk who needs to be in a nursing home, not the US Senate.
I've butted heads with rabscuttle before, but this time, I'm totally with him, 100%. McCain needs to go, and Hayworth needs to take his place - regardless of what compromisers and Party elitists and insiders think about it.

I work with one, a regular conservative in most ways except very few elected pols meet his standards. None that have held office for long.

So we should trade him for a 'rat with a rating in the 10's or less.
The republican party is a machine, it’s members are loyal to the machine, NOT to ideology. Parties are like empty bottles the ideology is what you put into it. Conservatives need to “infiltrate” and take over the party just as radicals took over the democrats. third party movements are losers for one simple reason. The two major parties fixed the system to make it impossible for third parties to win. Ergo, you need to take over the party first at all the local levels and then focus on electing the right people. The next step is then to stack the committees in washington. It’s the only route left save a civil war..
