An empty suit?
A Republican who hopes to prevent Democrat Evan Bayh from winning his third U.S. Senate term in 2010 is running his first commercial.
The ad features Marlin Stutzman, a state senator from Howe, standing next to a suit on a hanger.
"I don't approve of sending empty suits to Washington," he says, an implication that the moderate Bayh shifts with political winds.
Stutzman is emerging as the front-runner among three Republicans who have entered the race. The empty suit commercial is running only on cable channels right now.
Political observers think that to seriously challenge Bayh, Republicans need a candidate with similar fundraising prowess.
Stutzman, who had raised $74,000 through Sept. 30 and had $17,700 in the bank, can't match Bayh dollar for dollar.
He attempts to turn Bayh's campaign fund into a negative, saying, "my opponent has stacked up over $12 million in cash from special interests and D.C. lobbyists."

A fir ad? What’s he selling, plywood?
A fir ad is very timely and proper. It’s just about time to select a tree. I’m allergic and use an artificial blue spruce.
IN Senate race *ping*
I am NOT going to Indianapolis!
Field Marshal’s orders. Ya gots to go. ;-)
Bayh is in a stronger position than his more liberal daddy (who lost to Quayle in 1980) but I have faint hopes that Birch Evans III may face a real race next year, unlike in 2004 and 1998.
Who do you think has the best shot at beating Bayh?
Out of the candidates I see listed as currently running Marlin Stutzman is the most viable.
A higher tier candidate would be better.
I wish one of the statewide office holders would run.
Todd Rokita the SOS is up this year and term limited. The LT Guv, AG, and Education Superintendent wouldn’t have to risk their offices to run. I don’t know much about the records of any of them though.
In Indiana, the perception is that Evan Bayh is unbeatable statewide, except possibly by Mitch Daniels, who isn’t interested. That is true normally, though next year may produce an environment that’s out of the ordinary.
The GOP never challenged Bayh. When Bayh made his intentions to run for the Senate in 1998, the incumbent Senator, Dan Coats, declined to run, thus giving Bayh a free pass. Too many Hooisers fall for his “faux conservative” rountine. I wish conservative 527s would run non-stop ads exposing Bayh’s scam. That’s how long time New England RINO incumbents were ousted in 2006 and 2008.
I would think that the cloture vote alone would be enough to slap him around a little. Too bad Daniels isn’t up for it.
Yup Coats straight up wussed out and a gun grabbing RINO Mayor was nominated to face Bayh. And in 2004 an attractive candidate ran but got little support.
His prior statewide races were competitive though, for SOS and his first election as Governor. It’s while he was governor that he acquired his popularity. It was to the extent that his rat LT Frank O’Bannon essentially won a third term for him in 1996 over Steve Goldsmith who seems like he was a terrific Republican candidate to me. I was just a kid in 1996 but I remember the O’Bannon and Goldsmith ads that ran here in the Chicago media market. “Frank O’Bannon is no Evan Bayh” the ads went. Of course I had no clue who Bayh was so the ads lacked meaning for me. ;)
The hope is slight for this race but there may be a glimmer. If he votes for Obamacare he could possibly be Blanche Lincolned.
Speaking of fauxcons in Indiana. In 2004 I tussled with several freepers who were supporting Joe Kernan. I pointed out how the jerk had just helped gerrymander the congressional lines for his fellow rats and doubtless the state house lines as well.
Goldsmith’s loss in 1996 was nothing short of awful. He was quite probably the most accomplished, visionary major-city Mayor in the United States at that time. Had he won and continued his success as Governor, I submit he would’ve found himself on the 2000 Presidential ticket, quite possibly as the head of it.
Living in big city I have an admiration for successful urban Republicans like Goldsmith and Brett Schundler that prove conservative governance works and is the only hope for America’s cities. Most cities are total cesspools in terms of local government the bigger ones in particular. Daley. Gloomberg. Villar. I’d like to smack them all.
It’s damn shame neither Goldsmith or Schundler were elected Governor. A person with that kind of experience is exactly what we need in a President and to try and break the urban democrat stranglehold that harms a large % of the country’s population. Including you and me.
You’re very right. His success may ironically have contributed to his defeat, as some of his constituants wanted him to stay on as Mayor. Also, the ‘Rat benefitted from the popularity of outgoing incumbent Evan Bayh.
