The three-way race makes for a number of possible scenarios, including ones that have Scozzafava finishing first, second or even third. She is in real trouble. A lack of campaign resources and a classic political squeeze from the left and the right have severely damaged the prospects of Republican Dede Scozzafava, a six-term state Assemblywoman from Watertown. While initial polling showed Scozzafava leading Democratic attorney Bill Owens and Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, Owens has caught Scozzafava in recent private polling, and Hoffman continues to gain strength, making him a considerable factor in the contest and a growing problem for Scozzafava down the stretch. GOP insiders have grown extremely nervous about the race. They worry about Scozzafavas poor fundraising, lack of a compelling message to Republican base voters and weak showing in polling in the crucial Syracuse media market, which makes up about 30 percent of the sprawling district.

I hope the GOP loses this race, the senate race in Illinois and the one in Florida should Suntan Charlie get the nomination.
THe only problem is if she wins anyway, she’ll feel no reason whatsoever to even give lip service to conservative issues.
But it doesn’t sound like she does anyway.
This seems like a district we can take back next November, by beating her in a primary. The electorate appears pretty republican.
The Democrat is a wishy-washy nonentity with no experience or strong positions.
This is what it has come to, it only gets worse.
This special election will be a measure of how Conservatives can do in primaries next year, and what the possibility is in conservative districts for conservative candidates to run successful as independents.
I wish that half as many people who gave money to Joe Wilson from all over would donate and support Hoffman.
Scozzafava is the poster child for why I won’t give to the RNC or to the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee. She is an example of what is wrong with the party.

I take it that Scozzafava is a Moderate or Social Liberal. Hoffman sounds like he has a strong conservative message. In the midst of all this political malarky and media fawning, the moderates message gets drowned out by both the Liberal and Conservative ones.
Close. Scozzafava sounds like a Democrat, with Hoffman a fairly strong conservative. Check this from the article
And she (Scozzafava) is having problems raising money from Republicans, who point to her support for card check and President [Barack] Obamas stimulus package and say that she isnt a real Republican. Not a single House Republican voted for the stimulus bill.
Heavy TV advertising by the Club for Growth, which is backing Hoffman, in all three major media markets has peeled conservative voters away from the Republican, and GOP insiders worry that the bleeding will continue. Hoffman is also on TV, portraying Scozzafava as a fake Republican and a liberal Albany politician.
So far, conservative critics of Scozzafava have complained primarily about her record on taxes and spending, but some expect that her liberal positions on social issues, including abortion and gay marriage (which is mentioned in Hoffmans spot), will soon become more of an issue. Both Scozzafava and Owens favor abortion rights, while Hoffman does not.

If we want to move the Republicans to support more conservative candidates, a better strategy would be to support Hoffman now, and help him defeat this Liberal (beyond RINO) taking RCCC funds. The polls have this one going to a runoff, perhaps with no Republican in the runoff. I would rather see Hoffman in, and maybe the Republican party will move back in his direction and convince him to (re)join the Republicans.
I’m unemployed right now, but I just made a small donation to Hoffman to help him in his fight.
For those who believe the way we reclaim this country is by cleaning up the Republican party, but sticking with Republicans, this election in this one district is a way to send a strong message to Republicans. Run RINOs and you will lose.
If a pro-abortion, pro-stimulus Republican is the best they can come up with, why does it matter? You might as well give the district to the party that supports those positions. From the article, it sounds like the Democrat is to the right of Scozzafava on many issues.

Republicans need to open fire on Bill Owens, running lots of negative ads. He needs to be discredited. A Scozzafava victory would be bad, but an Owens victory would be worse. Hoffman is doing well, but conservatives need to do more to get him across the finish line.
thanks, bfl
