State Rep. Nikki Haley is adding her name to the list of Republicans hoping to become governor of South Carolina in 2010. Haley, a staunch anti-tax advocate, confirmed Thursday that she will mount a run for the seat currently held by Republican Mark Sanford, who is prevented by term limits from running for a third term.
For more than five years Ive sat in the statehouse and watched - sometimes in disbelief - as our state government has spent with abandon and in the process wasted taxpayer dollar after taxpayer dollar, Haley said in a release. I know what good government can look like. Im running for Governor so the people of this state will know what it feels like.
Rep. Haley is a three-term legislator who got elected on a reform platform in 2004 and has been more or less easily winning elections since. Her primary focus is on fiscal issues; shes a strong conservative on that front, and is actually, when it comes to endorsements its the usual deliberate murkiness. Governor Sanfords statement:
Its too early to endorse anyone, Sanford said Thursday. But I would say Nikki Haley would make a terrific and inspiring choice as governor, and shes a great addition to the field of candidates.

Not Guilty
She was Sikh, she is a Methodist. Reminds me of an old joke i read from the Goldwater campaign; “It figures. The first Jewish President would be Episcopalian.”
Wow, the Republicans are hot !!!
I love this, new blood coming up and we better not let anyone blow it.
Was AUH20 Episcopalian?
I checked this lady out awhile ago. You’ll find this, ahem, “enlightening”:
Nikki Haley:
“Im supporting Governor Mitt Romney for President. He exemplifies everything I think our country needs right now. He is someone from the outside, a business person who understands the importance of stretching a dollar. Hes also proven himself capable of handling crisis situations in his dealings at Bain Capital, with the Utah Olympic Games and as Governor of Massachusetts. He understands that running a strong and efficient government doesnt come from talking about it, but from getting your hands dirty and doing it.”
No Slick Willardbot disciples for high office, period.
That’s highly disappointing.
If she thinks Mitt is a good candidate for President that I highly question either her knowledge about Mitt or her adherence to conservatism.
Putting it mildly. Either this lady was lied to in repeating those shameful talking points, which makes her easily fooled, or she truly believed in the disaster that is Slick Willard. Either way, it doesn’t make her look good.
Secondly, even if she never endorsed the King RINO Democrat agent himself, she is making too big a jump. If she were Speaker or even party leader in the House, that would be one thing, but she needs more seasoning in another office, perhaps running for Lt Governor or Sec of State, etc (actually, Politics1 has her listed also as a potential candidate for Treasurer).
As of now, I’m backing Atty Gen Henry McMaster for the office (though he hasn’t officially declared).
That was my thought too.
I hadn’t heard of her before. I agree she seems a little green for a run for Governor compared to McMaster.
I don’t know how much weight to put in Sanford’s quasi-endorsement of her or how much to fault her (or DeMint or Tom Tancredo) for supporting the thing from Massachusetts/Utah/Michigan/New Hampshire. McMaster endorsed McSlime I hear and some South Carolina freeper gave me grief for that when I said I was inclined to think he was the best choice.
I heard of her when I was reviewing a list of the members of the SC House. Her name jumped out at me and I wanted to learn more. She won office by defeating a longtime GOP incumbent in a particularly nasty battle, but I got the impression she seemed to be more like from the Country Club set. She might have a good voting record, but the Slick Willard endorsement and repeating of those odious talking points would earn a major thrashing from me. She obviously either had no clue about him, or supported the disaster that he was, and still remains, either way it showed she’s not ready for prime time.
Also proves we shouldn’t promote on the basis of looks. That’s how Slick Willard got in.
I think a lot of people do vote on looks, considering it to be an important “issue” almost.
She made a bad choice. But back in 2008, you said on FR that a lot of otherwise sensible people had made the same mistake. If that’s all that’s wrong with her, I’m willing to give her another chance.
I can't support McMaster right now - he's a McCain RINO sycophant. I'm looking very closely at Gresham Barrett. He's pro-life and pro 2nd Amendment. From his site: "The American Conservative Union gave Gresham their second-highest conservative score, while National Journal ranked him the fourth most conservative member of the U.S. House of Representatives."
It’s one thing for average folks on the street to perhaps not know what was going on with him, quite different when these are elected officials who SHOULD know better. Repeating those debunked talking points to claim he was a “great leader” were shameful. It calls into question her expertise and basic common sense.
