Former U.S. Rep. John Sweeney is laying the groundwork to attempt a political comeback, possibly in a 2008 challenge to the woman who defeated him in November, said Warren County Republican Chairman Michael Grasso.
"There's a few scenarios that could play out," Grasso said. "Let's just say none of those options would be for lower office (than the House of Representatives)."
U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-Greenport, defeated Sweeney, a four-term Republican incumbent from Clifton Park, in November.
About a week before the election, Sweeney and his wife, Gayle, acknowledged the State Police came to their home on Dec. 2, 2005, to answer a complaint, but the Sweeneys claimed a police report leaked to newspapers was fabricated.
New information will be coming forth soon that will cast the State Police visit to the Sweeney home in a different light, said Grasso, who said he had lunch with Sweeney last week.
Grasso said Sweeney has his full support if he runs against Gillibrand next year.
"John's a good man, and to be honest, I miss him," Grasso said.
Clifton Park Republican Chairman Michael Lisuzzo also said he would support Sweeney if he runs for the House seat next year.
"I can tell you he would obviously have my support on any project, including Congress," Lisuzzo said.
Gillibrand, contacted Tuesday, at first chuckled when a Post-Star reporter asked how she felt about a possible rematch with Sweeney.
Gillibrand then said she is working hard on discussion of a new farm bill and developments in the Iraq war.
"I'm just so focused on my job right now; I want to do a good job," she said.
Other area Republican leaders said it is too early in the process to declare allegiance to any particular candidate.
"Congressman Sweeney has reached out to me indirectly, but

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
You know, if Gerald Soloman (who served before Sweeney) had any say in it when he retired, we wouldn't be in this mess. He wanted his successor to be Roy McDonald, then a local Mayor and now a state Assemblyman. But George Pataki wanted Sweeney and pulled some strings. Incidentally, Pataki and Sweeney had a nasty falling out last year, and Pataki abondoned his former aide.
(and the dirty little secret about her working for 9 years as part of the Hildibeast's "underground staff")
Unfortunately, dear Gerry Solomon has gone to that big Assembly in the sky, but he'd be madder than hell than a rodent was sitting in HIS seat. :-(
I agree that Sweeney ought not to seek a rematch given the situation.
I would prefer the looker in some other part of Pennsylvania. Don't remember her name but man is she hot!
You talkin' bout Mutha's opponent, Diana Irey ?
Diana Irey. Mega-dittoes.
Regarding the Republican who should take on Gillibrand in 2008, it is really a no-brainer. 2006 gubernatorial nominee John Faso, a solid conservaive who represented Columbia County in the state legislature for years and who has better name ID district-wide than does Gillibrand, would wipe the floor with her. The NY-20 is solidly Republican, giving President Bush 54% in 2004, and accused spousal abuser John Sweeney may be the one Republican who could lose there.
