NRSC Launches Negative Ad Campaign Against GOP Senate Candidate Stephen Laffey In RI

The NRSC quickly waded into US Senator Linc Chafee's 2006 re-election race. The party organization is already running harsh TV spots in the state attacking investment banker and Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey, Chafee's conservative GOP primary opponent. The commercials try to tie Laffey to the unpopular oil industry and high gas prices, blasting Laffey for having previously run "a company selling oil industry stocks on Wall Street. Profiting from offshore oil drilling. The oil companies made a fortune. Steve Laffey made a fortune."

How do we find out if the NRSC is allowed to use the funds they raise to meddle in primary campaigns?

This is appallling! Stephen Laffey is not a Jesse Helms clone who could never be elected. He has, after all, won city-wide in Cranston, which is not known for its conservative voting habits.

The NRSC is acting like a bunch of %&#*!&)^@ LOSER RINO'S!

To be honest, I don't know. If I'm not mistaken, they normally only do so in cases where a candidate has token opposition.

I don't blame them for going through the motions of supporting an incumbent, but smearing a credible candidate in a primary is way off base.

More proof that the 11th Commandment is a one way street.

Yes, exactly. He MADE his money, unlike the limp-wristed effeminite Tooth Fairy Chaffee.

Laffey may be bat-shyte crazy, but he's a better option than that waffler we have now.

FALSELY smearing him is worse. Does the republican party now stand for the idea that if you worked the oil business, you are corrupt and responsible for high prices?

I thought that was moveon.org.

This ad sounds like it was written by Moveon.org or Democratic Underground.

One reason why the NRSC and RNC will not receive a dime from me.

Liddy Dole sucks.

This is where we have to come in and donate and call the NSRC and tell them to BACK OFF if they EVER want our money again!

My email to NSRC:

Your ads against Laffey in Rhode Island are despicable! And the weak Senate Republicans (like Chaffee!) so afraid of a fight that Bush chose to nominate Miers instead of Luttig or Janice Rogers Brown is EXACTLY why you won't ever be getting another penny from me. I've been a Republican since 1994. I didn't leave the party; the party left me. You guys are disgusting right now. Hope you enjoy your power in DC while you have it. You guys OBVIOUSLY left your principles back home.

Learn to fight for your principles like a Democrat, or go back home.

Pence 2008!

I went to the site, and watched the ad. THen I wrote them, telling them they were despicable among other things.

I understand supporting Chafee, while I don't like it. They are the senatorial committee, and they are supposed to defend the current senators. Telling us why we should vote for Chafee instead of a challenger is a reasonable use of their funds. This is why I wouldn't give them money anyway, preferring to send money directly to candidates I support.

But we shouldn't stoop to false attacks, especially attacks that say that being a stock broker means you are in bed with companies that sell stocks.

It makes me glad I'm registered as a Conservative. My contributions are sent to what's considered the most effective lobby, which happens to be the USA's oldest civil rights organization, or as direct contributions.

Today's pubbies and RINOs are getting too smart by half. Their current political calculus is alienating their base at their peril in 2006. They've given up their principles for politics. There's little difference from the dems endorsing the pro-life Casey in PA. It's just politics.
