Increasing the size of the Military (Kerry will bring back the Draft)

Posted on 10/01/2004 8:33:55 AM PDT by Always Independent

Kerry keeps stating that he will beef up the military by adding two more divisions to the army. As it is now, our armed forces are all volunteer and the most highly trained dedicated professionals this country ever fielded. I'm just wondering, where will he get all these new volunteers from? Hey Charlie Rangel D NY and a number of other demagogues got an idea and a bill ready to go. Lets Bring back the draft!

Could it be that this is really JFK's plan? He keeps stating that he has a plan, NO DETAILS but its a better plan.

Before the Clinton administration, we had an all volunteer force with 8 more active duty army divisions without recruiting problems.

We could use 8 more now. The only difficulty is getting the administration to ask for them and pay for them.

I know, but I would like to have enough regulars to be able to do this and handle North Korea or Iran, without using National Guard or Reserves. They should be for true emergencies, like having to fight China, or the EU.

Where will you get the recruits from? How much do you have to offer someone to sign up? The only place I can see getting them from is to pull them out of Europe which I think we should do and they are going to do. Wish there was a clear answer! But I know that JFK doesn't have it.

We had that many volunteer troops in 1990, has America's youth changed that much?
I doubt it.

This isn't 9/12/2001. Did you see most of the college students on the cable news shows? With the exception of a few, I'd say that they are all living off their parents and don't have a care in the world. The doors are open at the enlistment centers. Does it mean that we have to be hit again as we were on 9/11/01 before they get the message. I had to sign up for the draft right out of HS in 1972 and I did. The lottery was still in effect then. That year 11 friends all drew low numbers but not one of them was called up. I had a high number and the draft was stopped a year later. I think its easier to enlist people when your not in a war.

There are a pack of VN draft-dodgers in Nelson, BC trying to erect a monument. We told them to "take-off". I'm ex-military, and served with many Americans. My father is American. AI, I salute you - for doing your duty. I don't know what is wrong with the youth now. I suspect it's because they never had to fight for their right to sit in front of a TV or have a home to go to. I wear around my neck a medal my grandfather got for coming home in one piece from WW1. He was American. But he served in the British Army - they got involved years earlier. I don't think anyone, the Lord knows that donut inhaling Michael Moore doesn't - even understand what it would mean to stand up and fight for something you truly believe in, and never waver.

George W Bush is a man that isn't afraid to make a decision and stick by it. We are at war, but no one seems to remember this fact. And I'm so ashamed of my country's (ha) leadership, I can't tell you.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the draft. I can't see a problem with giving back to your country after it gives you so much. I served for years.

It will be a monument of shame. I slaute your service. I myself haven't served and at the time of my signing up for the draft, the war was winding down. If called I would have answered. Those that went north will have to live with it. When I look back, I wish that I did. Would have been a better person for it. My older brother was drafted in 68. I guess he was fortunate though, He served in the states for a year then a year in Germany. I don't see nothing wrong with the draft but a volunteer is always more motivated.

Yes, thank you for your service also. I have to say as far as bringing back the draft, I doubt it. The draft bills in the house and senate were political bills meant to damage Bush, not bring back the draft. The draft is what is used to mobilize the public against an administration. Could the US have been turned against Vietnam without the draft? Maybe, but certainly not as easily.

As for the troops, Kerry was also planning on pulling troops from Germany and Korea, but Bush preempted him. I doubt highly that Kerry cares one bit about boosting military levels.

Thanks so much. There is no one I admire more than the Bush family. Their dedication to the United States is just, well, awe inspiring. Only President Reagan or, oddly enough...Kennedy, JFK. did as well at speaking and lifting up the USA and making your country proud to be .. American.

Having just finished up over 21 years with the USN, I can say that the all volunteer force is the ONLY way to go. We learned a lot of great lessons from the draft. Trying to motivate, lead and train those unwilling to be there is disastrous. The Bush administration fully understands this (therefore nixing the draft idea), but I doubt those on the left understand. Our recruitment numbers have been so high since Bush was elected that we were only taking high school grads and those with GEDs and the upper mental groups. Only recently have I heard talk of the Army dipping below those levels (to pre-1999 recruiting methods). With Kerry in office, all bets are off though. Precious few would want to serve under a left leaning administration. I don't see how a Kerry administration could AVOID a draft and keep the numbers needed up.
