The general election is 10 months away, but Indiana's race for governor is already heating up. Beginning Thursday, Republican candidate Mitch Daniels will make political history in Indiana when he launches one of the earliest ever campaign commercials.

They will air on television stations statewide.

The Daniels campaign says it just wants to introduce its candidate as early as possible. But Democrats are questioning his timing.

Still, they say Governor Joe Kernan has nothing to worry about.

"It's only been a couple of months that Governor Kernan has been in office, and he has done positive things, leading the state in the right direction," said Debbie Ladyga-Block of the St. Joseph County Democratic Party.

But South Bend Tribune columnist Jack Colwell says it will be a close race.

"There comes a time when the pendulum is going to swing the other way, and Democrats had better watch out for that," Colwell said.

Mitch Daniels still has to get through the primary election in order to run against Governor Kernan. Daniels will face Republican challenger Eric Miller in May. Daniels is the front-runner, although Miller has the backing of several prominent Hoosier Republicans, including former Governor Doc Bowen.

I hope to see some Mitch ads to make up for all the O'Bannon ads I forced to see in 2000 (NW Indiana is in the Chicago media market). As if seeing commercials for Illinois rats is enough. :p
