Richard Morgan's "Altered Carbon"
vanity-book commentary | August 9, 2003 | cgbg jr

I want to highly recommend this book.

This is Morgan's first, just released in the U.S. this year. It is a noir detective story in a science fiction setting. The SF ideas come fast and furious, and the detailed description of a future San Francisco will capture your imagination.

Immortality is a theme that has come to the forefront in science fiction in the digital age. If our brains were downloaded into computers, and clones were held in storage in the event of our death, then, voila, we could live forever.

Richard Morgan explores the dark side of such a technology in this R rated (lots of sex and violence, warning) shocker.

This is one of many top-notch SF books coming out of the UK in the past few years.

The good news is you live forever.

The bad news is you have to pay an annual license fee to Microsoft.

See Jack Vance's To Live Forever. I am not suggesting plagiarism, but I will dare to suggest that Vance wrote a better book.
