A possible Free Republic answer to the Oscars: "The Ronnies"
3/23/2003 | Self

I was thinking that a Free Republic answer to the Oscars would be a good thing. The only movies eligible for the award would be those that present a conservative view of the world.

A movie can be considered as having a conservative view for many reasons. The movie might embrace traditional values, portrays sacrifice for a good cause as heroic, or acknowledges evil as a force that must be dealt with.

(I apologize for one thing: I had tested this idea in the form of a comment on two past threads that dealt with the Oscars. I was partly trying to gauge if people liked the idea. Some of the material below is thus a repeat of what I wrote on previous threads.)

Anyway, we couldn't call these awards the Oscars. We'd have to name them after some prominent actor or actress who also did a lot of work to advance conservative causes. The obvious choice is the great Ronald Reagan. Here now are nominations for "The Ronnies."

Roll out the red carpet, please. And the nominees for the coveted "Ronnie" for Best Picture of the year for 2002 are:

--A WALK TO REMEMBER:

Why nominated: Here's a teenage love story with a pop singer playing the lead role. Not "Ronnie" material, you say? This movie will surprise you. The lead character is a Christian who lives up to her beliefs and is shown as a hero for doing so.

--BARBERSHOP

Why nominated: this movie emphasizes the importance of listening to elders and the value of small businesses. the movie also emphasized honest labor as a source of dignity. This movie gets extra points because it's very funny and Jesse Jackson hated it.

--DRUMLINE:

Why nominated: I admit I haven't seen this one, but I hear it emphasizes hard work as a key to success. Also, the reviews were largely positive.

--LORD OF THE RINGS:

Why nominated: the following dialogue says it all.

Théoden: I will not risk open war!

Aragorn: Open war is upon you whether you risk it or not.

This movie is very appropriate for the times, as it's about the necessity of heroism in the face of unrepentant evil.

--SIGNS

Why nominated: This is a movie about how God can help in ways we may not first appreciate.

I open the floor to votes, or perhaps write-ins for movies I missed. It's 6:18 pacific time. The winner is based on whatever gets the most votes, either by reply or freepmail. The winner to be announced tomorrow evening if I get 20 or more responses. If not, I'll admit my first-ever vanity wasn't a good idea. :)

I haven't seen any of the other movies, but my vote is for Signs, because God did such a WONDERFUL job when he made Mel Gibson (shall reason, yes).

nominating for past movies... : almost anything Mel Gibson. and in cases.... Sean Connery (just cause he's the man) anything with maddonna, susan suranwrap, or toby maguire, is automatically disqualified

My vote is for Lord of the Rings, because of the storyline... the whole concept of sacrafice for something bigger than yourself.

I'd also nominate Braveheart, and Patriot, since those remind me that great things can happen when small numbers of people want them to.

Good post btw. I was at the Ocsars this morning and it made me feel icky. I'm much better now.

would be nice... maybe we can get one started in Georgia, or NY... opposite Kalifornia. maybe it could start of with some funding by Fox syndicate.... (and our own pockets as well) we could get all the right-thinking stars... like Drew Carey, and just start countering Hollywood

When I went around looking for who to bump for this thread, I noticed a bunch of folks who worked in the movie business. Those people need to know they are not alone.

Maybe the first step is to use FR to start a "Freeperarts" group. I'm not in the movie business, but I'm a playwright on the side, and would love to be part of such a group.

I'm in the film biz and one movie that I think is excellent that promotes HOPE is "Pay it Forward"...even though it came out a few years ago.

That would be great to have a conservative film studio type thing, producing revealing documentaries on the true agenda behind the peace protests, and then getting them out to the public to spead the truth!!!

Ok, maybe I'm a little too hopeful, but it sounds so exciting. :)

Also, if you do start a Freeperarts group, can you put me on some sort of a ping list or something?

I vote for Lord of the Rings for the sheer vastness of the story. However, I do have one reservation- the second movie carried a very anti-technology message with the Ents .

Well, one night after Oscars. I didn't get 20 posts on this thread, so I can't name a winner. But "Lord of the Rings: the Two Towers" did awfully well among those who voted. It's how I would have voted.

Nevertheless, this thread and a few related threads prove that not all creative folks are lefitsts. I definitely think a bump list would be in order on the subject of conservatives and the arts. I'll send out a freepmail to those who I think might be interested. This list would include only those who reply that they are interested.

Of course, there might be a bump list on this subject already, and I'm not on it. If that's the case, please enlighten me.

Thanks, all!
