Parcells bolsters his staff by adding NY's Payton

Giants offensive coordinator to become assistant head coach

01/10/2003

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

New York Giants offensive coordinator Sean Payton has agreed to come to Dallas as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach under Bill Parcells, according to two sources close to the negotiations.

The move gives the Cowboys a young offensive innovator. And it gives Payton, a Jon Gruden disciple, a chance to bounce back from having his offensive play-calling taken away by Giants coach Jim Fassel midway through this season.

Parcells and Payton couldn't be reached for comment. Nor could Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

The Giants confirmed that Dallas had asked for permission to talk to Payton, 39. Payton had one year left on his contract in New York.

The move almost certainly means none of the current offensive staff will be retained. Offensive coordinator Bruce Coslet, line coach Frank Verducci, tight ends coach Greg Seamon and running backs coach Galen Hall have already been let go. The only offensive coach recommended by Jones to Parcells was quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson.

But with Payton coming in and working with the quarterbacks as well as possibly calling plays, Wilson will apparently have the final two years of his contract paid off and be released. Wilson couldn't be reached for comment.

Payton began calling plays for the Giants two years ago and helped quarterback Kerry Collins blossom as the Giants reached the Super Bowl after the 2000 season. Payton's name became a hot commodity as a passing guru who learned his craft in Philadelphia in the late 1990s while Gruden was offensive coordinator.

Parcells announced Monday that Maurice Carthon, a former player and coach under Parcells who spent last season as offensive coordinator in Detroit, would be the Cowboys' offensive coordinator. But Parcells indicated that Carthon might not call plays. Carthon didn't call plays in Detroit (Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg did). Parcells suggested that he might call plays as he did while coaching the New York Jets from 1997-99.

According to those close to the Giants' situation, Fassel didn't have an issue with the plays being drawn up by Payton but instead took issue with his feel for when to call certain plays. Fassel decided to call the offensive plays himself for the first time since 1999 after watching his team score seven touchdowns in the first seven games of the season.

Sean Payton is credited with developing Giants quarterback Kerry Collins.

Under Payton, the Giants ranked No. 13 in the NFL in passing and total offense in 2000 and ranked ninth in total offense and eighth in passing in 2001. The Giants finished the 2002 season sixth in the NFL in both total offense and passing offense.

As Parcells continues to put his staff together, linebackers coach Gary Gibbs and special teams coach Joe Avezzano appear to be the only other possible holdovers from the current coaching staff, according to two sources. Parcells has already retained defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and defensive ends coach Jim Jeffcoat.

It also appears Dave Campo will rejoin Butch Davis in Cleveland as defensive coordinator, the sources said. Dallas secondary coach Clancy Pendergast and defensive tackles coach Andre Patterson are possible candidates to join Campo in Cleveland.

"Is this a good thing?"

IMO, Yes.
Parcells' is stocking his staff with young, energetic coaches.
Payton worked under Gruden and is considered quite bright.
Here is an exceprt from the Startlegram about another young coach BP is looking at, we might not get him though.

"Now, it appears that receivers coach Wes Chandler is in the on-hold position. According to a source, Chandler has yet to be let go by the Cowboys because Parcells is waiting on Arizona receivers coach Jerry Sullivan, whose contract expires Monday. Sullivan, however, has an offer to be Arizona's offensive coordinator and is contemplating staying with the Cardinals."

He's gonna be the quarterback's coach? Does this imply they're going to go out and get some quarterbacks?
