I'm looking for quotes and links by George W. Bush regarding his opposition California's Proposition #187, which would have denied State tax-funded benefits to Illegal aliens.
I'm interested in his quotes during the1994 campaign and afterward.
Thanks.
I get better results with them than Google.
Sorry, incorrect.
He found the time, but didn't recieve the notoriety that Kemp and Bennet did. I'll flag you when the quotes come in.
Here's one of the quoteless references I mentioned (from an admirer, BTW)...
"...he supported the bailout, in the peso bailout. He also rejected Proposition 187 in California, neither of which was hard in Texas but was very hard in the national context, and this was a guy who had national ambitions at the time."

I opposed Proposition 187 in California. When Social Security reform ended federal food assistance to immigrant seniors, I was the only governor in the country to cover the cost.

"I was against the spirit of . . . [Proposition 187] for my state," Bush said of the 1994 California measure. "I felt like every child ought to be educated, regardless of the status of their parents."Still looking for concurrent quotes though, in case you don't take the President at his word.
Interesting, though, that Bush misrepresents the "spirit" of 187 here, since children weren't going to be kept out of taxpayer-funded schools for the status of their parents, but for their own. That is, children who themselves were Illegal would not be entitled to public education in California.
Bush Brings Presidential Drive to Calif., Reaches Out to Latinos (06/30/99)The links to the L.A. Times article are no longer operational - no surprise there.
As with the NY Times article (above), the LA Times makes much of the fact that Bush refused to directly endorse California's proposition 209. According to the LA Times, the major news pertaining to Bush's visit to this state is that he did go on record as opposing the controversial Proposition 187 which would have barred illegal immigrants from state-supported benefits."Trying to banish the ghosts of failed campaigns, Texas Gov. George W. Bush opened his presidential effort in California on Tuesday with an explicit embrace of Latinos and an implicit criticism of the tactics employed by Republicans here in the past.
[In opposing Calif. Prop. 187, Bush said] "'Everyone must have a first-rate education, because there are no second-rate children, no second-rate dreams,' Bush told audiences of campaign donors in La Jolla, Irvine and Los Angeles as he opened a three-day California tour. Boasting of improved school scores among Latino and African American children in [his home sate of] Texas, he added: 'I believe in the best for every single child in my state.'" ...Like Gore, Bush says a phrase or two in Spanish in most of his speeches. But more important, he has opposed Proposition 187, regularly reminds Californians of his opposition and is convincing California Republicans to back off their support as well.
"We weren't going to have a 187 in my state.... I was against the spirit of 187 for my state," Bush told reporters after visiting the Plaza de Mexico section of the Del Mar fair near San Diego...

So, the L.A. Times is calling #187 a "failed campaign?"
In their dreams. If #187 failed, why did the Governor they endorsed have to violate his campaign pledge and oath of office to get it killed?
OK .. did just a "little" research on prop 187 and it seems to have covered several issues like medial health care, social programs, seniors and one being education
By that quote above it sounds like Bush didn't like the education portion of it .. which I can understand for several reasons .. one being if these kids are not in school then they will be on the streets which will end up with even a bigger problem and cause crime rates to increase even more
Now I understand you will say that they are illegal and shouldn't be here .. but might I also mention that their parents maybe illegal but if these children were born in the USA .. then they ARE US citizens
Then there is how will the State know exactly who is legal and who is not .. seems to me that the State would also need to fork out more funds to find out who should attend the schools and how shouldn't
Bottom line .. it seems to me that this prop 187 wasn't worded very good ..
Now I know you won't like my answer .. so let's hear it .. LOL
The L.A. Times is to a real NEWSPAPER as the L.A. river is to a real RIVER.

Mexico's crime rate is Mexico's problem.

Bottom line .. it seems to me that this prop 187 wasn't worded very good ..No, the State would have simply required proof of legal residence... which they do anyway at our colleges and JCs to determine who qualifies for in-state tuition.
A little extra paperwork and not much extra bureaucracy.
Remember, the schools report to the state their daily attendance, as that's how they're paid.
The wording was fine, it got killed by a leftist judge and our current corrupt Governor.
Oh come on .. we are talking about government .. they wouldn't know what that means
Was this a result of a Dallas Morning News search, or from another site?
Bush is a RINO, a socialist and interested in garnering votes. He does not care about the constitution or the welfare of this Nation and his down home act is just that: an act.
Prop 187 was crafted by former INS officials, among others. It was struck down by a leftist judge, Marianne Pfaelzer (sp?), and Gov Gray Davis, in a backroom deal that denied the proposition review by any court other than that of Marianne Pfaelzer. Two people alone managed to overturn the vote of California voters. This hardly equals the proposition being "badly worded".
I am not knocking the entire portion of prop 187 .. I am just saying I can see how some may not agree with it entirely and that it could cause some problems
