I don't even include those years in the list of presidents. The list ends Reagan, Bush, Bush.

Actually, the 70's were called the "me" decade, while they were still going on.

More specifically, it was Tom Wolfe who hung "The Me Decade" upon the 1970s - in an essay called "The Me Decade and the Third Great Awakening," which remains in print in his collection Mauve Gloves and Madmen, Clutter & Vine.

As for the Clinton decade, how about...it depends on what your definition of 'decade' is...

The 1990s were great! The internet exploded into use. People were making money hand over fist. Music was good again (well, the early 90s anyways). Politically, the Republicans took control of both houses in '94 and prevented Clinton from really screwing it up.

Reasonable minds (James Bovard, for one, in "feeling your pain": The Explosion and Abuse of Government Power in the Clinton-Gore years; David Schippers, in Sell Out, for another) might dispute that. Enablement (which is precisely what the Republican-controlled Congress - and that control, in case one had forgotten, shrank little by little as the Clinton era went onward - did, in the final analysis) did not prevent Clinton from really screwing it up. And it only begins with Mr. Bovard's observation that, even though the Republicans had control of Congress for six of the eight Clinton years, most Congressmen of either party had little real interest or desire to know just how the government's programs were or weren't working, or how it was really putting the screws in. To borrow a phrase, they had their chance - they did not lead. And we're still paying a severe price for it.

If Americans want good government, then dozens of government programs must be abolished and hundreds of laws that turn government into a public nuisance must be repealed. All other "reforms" will only prolong the abuse of the American people. - James Bovard.

Certainly it can be looked at that way. However, I shudder to think how bad things would have been had the Republicans *not* gained control of congress during the Clinton years.
