Tribe pitcher misses start against Angels

04/04/02

Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter

Anaheim, Calif.

- Indians pitcher Chuck Finley did not make his scheduled start last night for the Indians after his actress wife, Tawny Kitaen, was charged with attacking him Monday night.

"Chuck Finley called me and told me he was dealing with a personal issue, and that he could not make it to the ballpark and couldn't pitch if he could," said Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro. "We discussed the matter, and my concern is for Chuck and his family."

Tori Richards, a spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney's office, told the Associated Press that Kitaen was arrested Monday night after the couple argued as they drove to their home in Newport Beach, Calif. A third party called the police, and Kitaen was arrested when officers noted scrapes on Finley.

Richards said Kitaen kicked Finley with her high-heeled shoes while he was driving.

"She kicked him in the thigh, in the leg, in the arm, she grabbed his ear and twisted it," Richards said. "At one point, her high-heel shoe was on top of his foot pressing the accelerator to the ground."

Kitaen, 40, was ordered released yesterday on her own recognizance from Orange County Jail.

A judge issued a restraining order to keep her away from Finley.

She was charged with spousal abuse and battery, two misdemeanor counts, and faces up to a year in jail and a $6,000 fine.

The Indians did not play Monday.

Finley, 39, was in uniform for Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Angels and talked to several reporters before the game. The left-hander seemed to be in good spirits and didn't mention any personal strife.

Rookie right-hander Ryan Drese started for Finley last night. It's not known when Finley will rejoin the Indians.

"We expect him to rejoin the team over the weekend in Detroit," said Shapiro. "But I told Chuck to take as much time as he needed."

Manager Charlie Manuel said Finley could start Monday or Tuesday at Jacobs Field. Monday is the home opener against Minnesota.

Finley and Kitaen have been married since 1997. They have two daughters, Wynter and Raine.

Kitaen appeared in the 1984 movie "Bachelor Party" with Tom Hanks. She also appeared on such TV shows as "Seinfeld," "Married . . . with Children," and "The Howard Stern Show."

She was previously married to David Coverdale, lead singer for the British heavy metal band Whitesnake.

Tawny's apparently never quite learned how to properly behave in a car. :snicker:

Things like this always seem to happen to the Tribe.

She sure gets around. She used to be married to that guy from Whitesnake, and I'm sure she's been married/hooked up with a bunch more.

Just saw some "camera in celebrity's face while trying to walk" shots on the morning news. What a SKANK! She looks old enough to be her husband's mother!

Try being your own mother-in-law sometime. Yeesh. :)

She should be arrested just for giving her kids such horrible names, along with Demi Semi Hemi Moore, who named two of her daughters, Rumer and Scout. LOL!

Seriously though, Whitesnake Rocks!

The irony is David Coverdale's absolute favorite place in the world to party was Swingo's in Cleveland (as shown in Almost Famous), so Tawny probably had some memories of her own from here. Then her husband signs to play ball for the Tribe.....LOL.

If I were Chuck Finley I wouldn't be seen anywhere near the locker room for a while. Husbands who are on the recieving end of spousal abuse are often ostracized and ridiculed. In the macho world of baseball this poor guy is never going to live it down.

Had he called the cops, maybe, but he didn't so I doubt it. These guys all know precisely what would have happened to him if he hit back.

In fact, one of Finley's teammates is Wil Cordero, who got slammed in the media for hitting his wife a few years ago. She's supposedly gotten in all sorts of trouble since and he's been fine (except for not playing the field worth a damn).

Most guys these days don't think there's ever any excuse for hitting a woman. At least I'd like to think that's true.
