A sailing vessel off Gibraltar has become the first this year to be sunk by orcas that have been targeting boats in the area since 2020.
Crew members of the Alboran Cognac boat called rescue services for help around 9am on Sunday, saying that their ship had been damaged by orcas 14 miles from Cape Spartel, at the southern entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, in Moroccan waters.
The sailors said they had felt hits on the hull, before their rudder was damaged and they noticed a leak threatening to sink their 50ft boat, local outlet El Pais reports.
They were swiftly rescued by a nearby oil tanker around 10am, but the sailboat drifted off and sank following the orca attack.
Experts reportedly believe that the first ship wreck caused by orcas should be attributed to 15 Iberian killer whales, which are known as gladis.

We’re gonna need a bigger boat!
Saw some orcas playing frisbee with a seal on Monterey Bay.
Pink water.
Too bad the sailors didn’t have a few M-80s to toss overboard.
Only a matter of time. Killer whales kill blue whales and other baleen whales by diving into their mouths to eat their tongues, they deliberately chase and kill dolphins for fun, they eat great white sharks alive, tipping them over to chew their livers out. They’re basically the a***holes of the sea. You knew sooner or later they’d start wondering what we taste like.

The whale, named Espresso by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), first washed ashore April 25 on Preston Beach in Marblehead.... They decided to tow her out to sea on May 2.
Moved 50 miles out to sea
... the whale was moved more than 50 miles out in the ocean, according to Swampscott town administrator Sean Fitzgerald.
But, the whale didn’t decompose as fast as NOAA had expected and, twelve days later, she landed on a beach near Blodgett Avenue in Swampscott.
We need Homer and Springfield to step up.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Besides, there were all those boxes in the shed...
I was in high school in Portland when that happened. I probably would have skipped school to go see it if I’d heard about it ahead of time.

I was kind of alluding to that.
But- what does the highway division due about live whales, like on freeways and bridges?
It made a hilarious video.
Conversation with insurance provider "Well, I went for a walk on the beach, you see. And when I returned, I found that a 200 pound chunk of whale blubber fell from the sky, crushing my car roof....."
There’s a NatGeo documentary that shows orcas coordinating to create cavitation that breaks apart the ice flow a harbor seal has climbed onto to avoid them. Scary smart critters.
Call the Japanese and harpoon that bunch.
Orcas are scared to death of Pilot Whales. They leave the area.

Can they be trained to sink boats containing illegals?
For orcas, boats are the ocean’s pinatas...
