Armed police were deployed after machete-wielding groups fought in a mass brawl on a city street.
The fight, which happened late on Sunday evening on Burley Hill Drive in Kirkstall, Leeds, left at least six men with injuries.
West Yorkshire Police said they had arrested six men in connection with the fight.
Det Insp Dan Ridgway described it as "a significant violent incident" and appealed for information from the public.
A police spokesperson said they received reports of men attacking each other with weapons at 23:48 BST.
When officers arrived at the scene the people involved had fled, leaving a badly-damaged Mitsubishi Shogun and Volkswagen Passat behind.
Police said two men, aged 22 and 25, had suffered serious head injuries as a result of the fight.
A 35-year-old man also had a fractured elbow while a 22-year-old man suffered hand injuries.
They, and an uninjured 23-year-old man, were all arrested.
Two other men, who attended hospital in Bradford with suspected stab wounds, left prior to police arriving.

All the men were named Mohammed or Muhammad or Mohmed.
In our home-grown version, they'd be named D'shaun, DeMarcus or Phenique.
The police could start by giving us a description of the participants in this mass brutalation.
