After the communist revolution a lot of Russian/Americans returned to Russia to participate in the Socialist Utopia. Stalin had every last one executed. It would be reasonable from the Russian perspective to assume any American over there was a potential spy. Not saying that’s what happened, but failing to take into account previous Russian behavior is probably an error.

I believe you are mistaken. Some were executed, a fair number went to the gulags, where many died, some stayed in Soviet society. An excellent personal account is: Coming Out of the Ice by Victor Herman.
