But are people eating more fast food than previous ages? Obesity and diabetes rates have been going up since at least 1980.

I think people generally eat more processed food than even in the 1970s.
When I was a kid(born 1963)all the families in our neighborhood had a garden. We had houses with fruit trees. We went strawberry & blueberry picking in the summer.
Our moms canned fruits and vegetables. We put bags of the produce we could not eat into the chest freezer for later.
We very rarely ate out of the house.

Now, gardens are rare. I do have blueberry plants. We eat out one to two times per week. Some people stop and get a coffee every day. Some people never bring a lunch to work. They either eat out or order a lunch.

The biggest change is our sedentary lifestyle. We all sit in an office or cubical hooked into a smart phone, tablet, PC on the internet. We might have a stand up desk to burn a few more calories.

When I was a kid in the 70s we played pick up basketball, baseball, football, field hockey and guns. We went out in the woods and played in the stream. Built a dam. Road our bikes everywhere. Only the good athletes played organized sports past Tball and little league. We certainly didn;t play soccer. Except when the exchange students from Venezuela came over.

MY POINT IS WE DID NOT SIT ON OUR A$$ES TYPING AWAY ON A COMPUTER EATING CRAP FULL OF SUGAR AND FAT.
