A Christian in the Philippines has been nailed to a cross for the 35th time to mark Good Friday and pray for world peace as faithful around the world observe the Holy Week of Easter to commemorate their belief in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
More than 100 people turned out to see Ruben Enaje, a 63-year-old carpenter and sign painter, and ten devotees be nailed to wooden crosses - real-life reenactments that have become an annual spectacle drawing tourists to rural communities in Pampanga province, north of Manila.
The gory ritual resumed only last year after a three-year pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, and has turned Enaje into a local celebrity for his recurring role as 'Christ' in the Lenten reenactment of the Way of the Cross.
Enaje said that he has considered stepping back from the role due to his age, but added that he could not turn down requests from villager for him to pray for sick relatives and 'all other kinds of maladies'.
Ahead of today's appearance, Enaje said he would devote to pray for peace in Ukraine, Gaza and the disputed South China Sea, saying the need for prayers has deepened in an alarming period of conflict worldwide.
Enaje remained nailed up for more than 10 minutes as storm clouds gathered overhead. It began to rain as he was carried on a stretcher to a medical tent where his wounds were bandaged.
'I feel no pain in my hands but my body as a whole feels sore,' Enaje said.
'The Passion Play was longer this year because we lengthened the script. Maybe that was why my body feels sore.'
Enaje said this year might be his last appearance as Jesus.

World Peace. It doesn’t seem to be working
One Man was already crucified so that we might have peace. That should be enough.
It’s more than enough.
Meanwhile in San Francisco

Why call him a Christian? There’s nothing Christian about his stunt.
It didn’t work the first time either.
I imagine the turnout has been doubled in recent years because of Mel Gibson’s movie, “The Passion of The Christ”.
A very un-taught “Christian”.
I see that the good ‘ol Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are at it again. They really get off on mocking the Lord and profaning pretty much any all standards of decency - secular or religious. These are some seriously misguided and disturbed individuals.
They do this every year in the Philippines on Good Friday...this guy probably got more attention than most, but all of these folks deeply believe and there are more than few people doing it..
