NYC's worst landlord 'is punched in the face after arriving at Rikers Island to begin 60 day sentence for making tenants live in rat and roach-infested hellhole apartments

A man infamous for being one New York City's worst landlords was punched in the face shortly after beginning his 60-day sentence at Rikers Island.

Daniel Ohebshalom, known as a 'slumlord,' for forcing his tenants to live in appalling squalor, was hospitalized after the attack and might have broken facial bones.

The assault happened in the intake area of the Eric M. Taylor Center around 12:15 p.m. on Friday.

On the previous day, Ohebshalom had turned himself in to authorities after they had issued a warrant for his arrest.

Ohebshalom had reportedly failed to perform hundreds of court-mandated repairs on his Manhattan properties.

After years of vainly trying to slap the slumlord with fines, the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development decided to ratchet up the pressure and secured an arrest warrant for Ohebshalom.

The warrant said that Ohebshalom and 'his buildings have repeatedly appeared on lists of the worst landlords in New York City.'

The warrant continued that the 'violations cited in the arrest warrant are extensive and include serious, immediately hazardous conditions that threaten not only the residents’ quality of life but their health and safety.'

The squalid conditions included 'visible peeling lead paint, roach and mice infestations, inadequate electricity supply, and mold.'

Officials hoped to use Ohebshalom as an example, a way to warn other callous landlords that their nefarious business practices won't go unpunished.

You think they’re bad now?

Just let the government take them over and run them and see what happens.

This sounds like a movie I saw a number of years ago with Joe Pesci playing a slumlord who was like this guy. Can’t remember the name of the movie, though.

Made me think of Chicago's Cabrini Green, although every big democrat city has similar hell-holes

the advantage of government is that they can simply tear-down and bulldoze-over their slumlord history, move them somewhere else, and act like it never happened.

Fix them up by spending thousands of dollars and then what? You couldn’t pay me enough to be a landlord.

Hmmmm.

No pic at source of the ‘slumlord’, no imagery in the dm linked video report, no indisputable pic of the con in search results via media outlets.

Odd.

Detroit had Brewster-Douglass

Boston had the Orchard Park Projects

Buffalo had the Commodore Perry Street Homes

Cincinnati had Laurel Homes and Lincoln Court

It like science - everywhere the progressive-socialist social-engineering experiment was tried, the result was the same

Cabrini-Green in Chicago was infamously bad, probably the worst of all.

Oh, I didn’t see post 4. Let me add Marcy in Brooklyn, then — if not already mentioned!

Plenty of examples of that already in NYC—and this guy fell below even that standard.

If he fixed the apts up what could he rent them for? Is it an open market. Can he sell or is no one stupid enough to take on their inevitable not so silent dictatorial partner NYC/NYS?

Slumlords go to jail. People who chop up a couple of bodies inside the slum walk free.

Were the courts forcing any of the slum-dwellers to pay their rent or be vacated? One wonders, because that is the part of the story that shoud be required to publish anything about the issue..
