Yeah I hear you lol. But IMO it’s optional and sounds puffed up. I was reading an article just the other day on FR where a guy described himself as “an history professor” and I couldn’t help rolling my eyes...

• Use An if the next word starts with a “silent” ‘h’, followed by a vowel .
example:
