Scientists examined how butyrate, one of the short-chain fatty acids found in the gut, suppresses the growth of different colon cancer cells in the laboratory.
The results show that the benefit of butyrate is specific to the cell line studied and is apoptosis-dependent, a process of gene-directed cell death (this a molecular mechanism that plays a crucial role in removing damaged or mutated cells selectively from tissues in an orderly manner).
Diet composition is among several factors that can contribute to the prevention of colon cancer. Consuming a healthy diet that is high in fiber can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome, a community of microorganisms, including bacteria, that live in the human gastrointestinal tract.
The large intestine, commonly known as the colon, hosts a diverse group of bacteria that play a significant role in breaking down fiber and non-digestible carbohydrates, producing short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate) during the process. These fatty acids serve as the main energy source for normal colonic cells, reduce intestinal inflammation, and help increase bacterial diversity, therefore improving colon health.
A healthy balance of gut microbes can significantly reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases, such as colonic inflammation and cancer.
"This study provides a greater understanding of butyrate and how it inhibits colon cancer cell growth at the molecular level," said Huawei Zeng. "Findings show that the inhibitory efficacy of butyrate against colon cancer cells is cell type-specific, which may partially explain its anticancer property and clinical variability."
The data collected from the findings of this research with butyrate will help the team of scientists in an upcoming five-year project. The project focuses on the impact of lentil consumption on colon health in models of obesity.

It helps cells in the colon, disrupts colon cancer cells still capable of self-destruction (apoptosis), and helps the rest of the body, once in the bloodstream.
And here I’ve thought for 80 years that butyrate was a kind of lacquer used on fabric-covered airplanes.
The humanoid model plane has a fairly short glide path. It has one portal for replacing the covering that drapes the mobile frame.

On IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
By Davis W. Lamson, ND
The AARP Bulletin of December 2023 contains a creditable article, “Why Do I Have IBS” by Hallie Levine.
Without actually saying so, the article points out that the name “IBS” doesn’t really explain anything. Like most medical diagnoses, it’s just a description of the discomfort occurring.
In the case of IBS, there can be many potential causes and a few deserve more detailed explanation. Further if one pins down the real cause and treats that, a lot of time can be saved from experimenting with this and that.
The gut “microbiome” bacterial collection is important to being healthy all over. Disturbance there deserves a full stool culture to see “who is home.” Most physicians seem not to order a full culture, but prefer to hunt for one or two bad actors. The whole picture can be more helpful.
It is true that many of our major intestinal bacterial inhabitants do not culture well, but a full culture may settle the initial point of whether discomfort is from particular bacteria or fungi.
Food sensitivities or even allergy can be a major health issue. Food is our greatest environmental exposure and everyone, being genetically different, does not get along on the same foods.
Testing the level of food protein antibodies is easy and can be helpful, but all such tests are not the same. It’s claimed that three years is a generation of such testing. Some labs seem to be 20 years out of date.
Butyric acid is the major fuel for the lining of the large intestine. Butyrate also seems to have a rebalancing effect on the intestinal bacteria. Most of us seem to make enough by action of the right gut bacteria on fiber in the diet. In gut distress without identifiable cause, extra butyrate can be very helpful. This physician believes in only one very superior product, ProButyrate by Tesseract, carried in the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary.
