Steven Spielberg probably didn’t realize it at the time, but he dodged a bullet when he rejected the idea of casting Mel Gibson to star in his Oscar-winning 1993 film “Schindler’s List.”
Turning down Gibson wouldn’t have been easy, even for Spielberg. In the early 1990s, Gibson was a major star, coming off the box office success of his first three “Lethal Weapon” movies and with plans to soon direct his Oscar-winning film “Braveheart.”
“Mel Gibson’s name came up” for the role of Oskar Schindler, according to CAA co-founder Michael Ovitz. Schindler was the real-life German businessman who saved more than 1,200 Jews from the Nazis during World War II.

So Mel had a few - more than a few - and mouthed off. Big deal. I don’t think he could have pulled off the role of Oskar Schindler.
While I’m sure Gibson would have been good as Schindler, I thought Liam Neeson was just about perfect. He’s actually Irish, and while that’s not German, he still brought that European authenticity to the role. I’m not sure Gibson could have done that, although he certainly did a great job with Braveheart. But that’s a different persona than a German businessman.
Yeah, I just don’t see Mel Gibson as Oskar Schindler. I could see Mel Gibson playing Batman or Wolverine, but not Schindler.
But let’s not forget - the real hero of the movie was the accountant, played wonderfully by Ben Kingsley. He was the one who concocted the schemes, and cooked the books to hide everything from the Nazis.
Just a great, great film.

I don’t even care anymore. Every leftist actor mocks Christians, MAGA, white males, etc.
While slurs may be very distasteful They don’t necessarily mean that someone is anti antisemitic. For that I would rely on statements of content.
The only bullets Steven Spielberg is dodging are the rumors of his pedophilia.

Gibson isn’t a leftist. He is also a Catholic of the old school Catholics.
