Leslie: You agree with me, right, loop quantum gravity is the future of physics.
Leonard: Sorry Leslie, I guess I prefer my space stringy not loopy.
Leslie: Well, I’m glad I found out the truth about you before this went any further.
Leonard: Truth, what truth? We’re talking about untested hypotheses, uh, it’s no big deal.
Leslie: Oh, it isn’t, really? Tell me Leonard, how would we raise the children?
Heh, we think alike. Last night I got thinking about the scene where Sheldon is reciting a children’s rhyme (I guess) about the nearest stars, and found a bad quality clip of it which I’ve been thinking about using with the list on the MSU website. But it would have to be a post on a ‘real’ topic. :^)
I’m buying the argument that if string theory were real —it would spin off real world applications. But over the last 50 years—it has done nothing of the kind.
So how can it be so bewitchingly beautiful to math geeks and yet be a nothing burger?
Does beauty mean nothing?
Here’s my theory.
String theory won’t get us to the next star. But it might get us to the next galaxy.
In the meantime there are some intermediary physics that need to be explored—in order to get the civilization to the next stars and on into the milky way.
The whole physics community needs to drop string theory for awhile —and build off the normal 4 dimensions. Three dimensions of space and one dimension of time.
All the answers in four dimensions have not yet been realized. Get those done first.
Never cared much for Burton Cummings....................
Or his brother e.e.
😎🤦♂️👍...........................
Is there in truth no beauty? :^)
Not a good stage name, better not to say why.
I’m just taking the math geeks at their word—that their numbers are beautiful.
Further, I’m taking the math geeks view for granted —that an attribute of true well done math is that its elegant and beautiful.
Its all mud to me.
But then I enjoy watching NCAA wrestling. There are moves that I think are beautiful and winners who can win pretty and win ugly. And surfers talk about painting waves. its a thing of beauty to see them emerge from a pipeline wave.
Is there truth in no beauty? Yeah probably. But its ugly truth. I wouldn’t know what the math of that looks like. Probably math geeks don’t know either.
String Bikini Theory Makes Comeback.
There fixed it.
“Dark Matter Dark Energy etc is like frog dna in Jurassic park. It won’t work without it so let’s stuff something in to fudge it.”
invisible and undetectable shite has always been the refuge of fools in the world of physics, with recent examples being phlogiston as an “explanation” for fire and other oxidation reactions and “the ether” as an “explanation” as to how light propagates ...
When he left The Guess Who he had shot his wad.............
Yes but Pluto didn’t meet the criteria for the 9th planet. Therr re e are those still searching for it
What a silly world.
So she’s not saying String Theory is nonsense (which is what the headline seems to be implying), she’s saying the String Theory explanation of Dark Dimensions is nonsense.
Zat aboud it?
“Yes but Pluto didn’t meet the criteria for the 9th planet. “
It did when it was discovered.
Pluto, at least, just happened to eventually be in the area they were looking for it in, but has completely different characteristics (it is roughly 1/460th the mass it was thought to be based upon a miscalculation of Neptune’s mass, and in a different orbit). Its appearance in that spot was a coincidence that didn’t occur for decades after the calculations were completed.
Once upon a time, string theory was interesting...
However, it turned out to be “non-testable”...
String theory eventually morphed (to save jobs) into super-string theory...
Super string theory is utter nonsense...
Even a close examination of the filter in your clothes dryer will support that conclusion...
Yup. And she wrote the headline.
