NATO Expansion Would Be an Epic ‘Fateful Error’ (Eisenhower 1951)
LA Times ^ | 7/7/97 | Eugene Carroll

Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first NATO supreme veallied commander. Shortly after assuming that post, he wrote these words in February 1951:

“If in 10 years, all American troops stationed in Europe for national defense purposes have not been returned to the United States, then this whole project [NATO] will have failed.” One can only wonder at his reaction today if he learned that 46 years later, the United States was the dominant force in a plan not just to continue our powerful military presence there but to enlarge NATO’s responsibilities and increase U.S. costs and risks in Europe. If his granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, is any guide to his reaction, he would not be pleased. She gathered an impressive group of 49 military, political and academic leaders who joined her in signing an open letter to President Clinton on June 26 that terms the plan to expand NATO “a policy error of historic proportions.”

If that idiot Eisenhower had listened to General Patton the Russin threat would have been ended once and for all by 1947. Moscow, Leningrad, and Stalingrad would likely have been nuked but Eastern Europe would have been saved from 45 years of Russian enslavement plus Ukraine would now be celebrating 70+ years of freedom from the Russians.

Yup, Ike should have listened to Patton.

NATO and the UN are aligned, the USA should not be in it, protest USA sovereignty, get out of the UN

The heart of NATO is expressed in Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, in which the signatory members agree that

an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all; and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defense recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

You would not have me to deal with. In 1945 my dad graduated and had already enlisted by August. We barely, barely had enough A bombs to take out the japs. You’re right, minimum two years to end the war. Line up the resources VE Day on the European continent. Hard to say who would have won. After three A bombs, with a U.S./Soviet war ongoing in Europe, no way the japs would have surrendered. The American people would not have tolerated 5 million American casualties in two years to take Moscow and Tokyo. Your “strategy” would have also cost 40 million jap civilians and 60 million Chinese.

There were and still are no good reasons for Americans to die for that kind of project. As Bismark said The Balkans aren’t worth the life of a single Pomeranian grenadier. The balkans are far closer to Germany than the US is to Ukraine. Same goes for the rest of Eastern Europe.

At the very least Eisenhower should have let Patton take as much of Czechoslovakia as possible and push into Eastern Europe further.

But he really screwed up by not letting Patton and 3rd Army drive as fast as they could after Cobra took off.

Could have had an American blitzkrieg if he'd listened.

Plenty, but not a damn thing about the issues and circumstances America has to deal with in 2024.

If you go poking at the bear, don’t be surprised if the bear pokes back.

I live in Wyoming where we know not to poke bears. We kill them dead.

First came NATO expansion, the came Russian aggression.

Case closed.

Thousands of Americans lives gone, and trillions of dollars wasted.
