I’m reading the autobiography of Geddy Lee (singer, bassist for the group RUSH). One entire chapter is about his mom as a Jewish child living in Poland and going to the camps. He said as the Germans got more power (before the invasion) the anti-semitism from the Poles increased, and of course was terrible after the Germans invaded Poland. With what were once friends and neighbors singling them out as “JUDES”.
After the war his mom’s family returned to Poland to their home but were chased out, with the Poles keeping their personal belongings left in the home.
She returned 50 years later, and some of the Poles would still shout at her and call her names!
All that said, my first thought was a stash buried by a Jewish family before they were rounded up and sent to the camps.
His autobiography was really good.
I’m just a few chapters in. Don’t ruin it and tell me how it ends!
maybe in the very beginning, but I never heard of any ussr joint ops with germany after germany invaded Russia!
That’s completely irrelevant.
It would be nice to find out whose these were. In postwar interrogations, one of the SS upper ech stated that one of his superiors (it's been a while since I perused enough of the book to know I didn't want to read more) that Polish Jews were the "genetic powerhouse" of European Jewry, and that, with the exception of those liberated from the camps, every Polish Jewish individual had been killed.
In Geddy’s book he said that in most Polish villages, 90 to 95% of them were killed before even getting on the trains. His mom’s village it was “only” something like 25% of them were killed straight-away.
He thought it might have been due to the fact that her village had several factories that were useful to the NAZI’s, and they needed the Jews to work them. (His mom was 14 or something and worked in the local steel mill at first).
